Subject: Have you signed up for our summit on transitions to adult services?

What's coming up at Staf and how you can get involved...

Hear from sector experts on
transitions to adult services

Dear Friend

There’s something powerful about coming together.

Across Scotland, we continue to see the difference that strong relationships, shared learning and collective action can make in the lives of care experienced young people. Whether you're supporting young people directly, influencing policy, shaping services or bringing lived experience to the conversation, you are part of a community committed to creating better futures.

This summer and autumn, we have some exciting opportunities to connect, learn and inspire one another. Our new summit series is designed to bring together voices from practice, policy and lived experience to explore some of the most important issues facing young people today. We’re looking forward to welcoming many of you to our first summit, No Wrong Door: Improving Transitions into Adult Services, where we'll be exploring how we can work together to create smoother, more supportive pathways into adulthood.

We're also delighted to announce our National Conference 2026, No Cliff Edges: Pathways to Adulthood, Connection and Opportunity. Building on the conversations from our summits, the conference will bring our community together for a day of learning, reflection and action, focused on the relationships, opportunities and support that help young people thrive as they move into adulthood.

Whether you're joining us at a summit, contributing a conference workshop proposal, exhibiting, sponsoring or securing your conference place early, we hope you'll be part of these important conversations. Together, we can continue to challenge thinking, share what works and strengthen the support available to care experienced young people across Scotland.

Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to connecting with you in the months ahead.

With warm wishes

Jo Derrick
Chief Executive

Staf National Conference 2026 announced

Our national conference is taking place slightly earlier this year and we are now excited to share both the theme of the day and our open call for submissions.

No Cliff Edges: Pathways to Adulthood, Connection and Opportunity

Tuesday 6 October
Stirling Court Hotel

In a landscape where services and systems are increasingly pressured and complex, relationships remain one of our most powerful tools for change. For care experienced young people and for those who work alongside them, it is the quality of relationships, continuity of support and sense of belonging that play a vital part in shaping the journey into adulthood.

This conference creates a shared space to explore how we best support this journey. This year’s conference builds on our summit series to focus on what it takes to support real pathways into adulthood.

Since they were a huge hit in 2025, we will again be hosting workshops from a range of our members and project partners. And we will of course be showcasing all the latest from our Staf projects.

Call for submissions

We are now inviting conference contributions from practitioners, policymakers, researchers and care experienced young people who want to share:

  • Good practice and relational approaches

  • Innovative or emerging projects

  • Practice-based learning and reflections

  • Research that informs better pathways into adulthood

  • Creative work that explores connection, identity and belonging

We are particularly interested in work that shows what is possible when we move beyond systems and focus on people, relationships and continuity.

We welcome submissions that explore:

  • Pathways into adulthood

  • Relationships that last

  • Stability, security and opportunity

  • Voice, rights and participation

  • Workforce and practice

  • Creative and expressive approaches

We strongly encourage interactive and participatory approaches, rather than traditional presentation-only formats.

Please email your proposal to jennifer@staf.scot by Friday 17 July 2026. For full details on submitting a proposal, visit our website.

Exhibition opportunities

We will have a range of partners attending with information and exhibition stands. We invite you to get in touch if you would like to exhibit at our conference or sponsor the event. Explore the available opportunities in our guide or email bookings@staf.scot to discuss bespoke options for your organisation.

It's always a sellout, so grab your early bird tickets now. As always, our members benefit from further discounted rates, plus we offer a group booking discount.

Sign up for our online summits

Staf is bringing people together for something special - a brand new series of online summits designed to spark ideas, challenge thinking and strengthen the support around care experienced young people. Whether you’re a long-standing member or new to Staf, these sessions offer a unique space to connect, reflect and be inspired by voices from across policy, practice and lived experience.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple but powerful belief: real change happens when we listen, learn and act together. From amplifying the voices of young people with care and justice experience, to strengthening relationships and improving systems, Staf’s work is rooted in collaboration and shared learning. Our new summits build on that commitment - and we want you to be a part of it.

Why join us?

Across Scotland, there is growing recognition that systems can feel complex and fragmented, but strong relationships, shared learning and collective action can transform outcomes for young people. These summits are your chance to:

  • Hear directly from those with lived experience

  • Engage with fresh thinking and emerging practice

  • Connect with others across sectors

  • Be part of shaping what comes next

Who is it for?

You don’t need to be a Staf member to join. Everyone with an interest in improving outcomes for care experienced young people is welcome. So whether you’re looking to learn, connect or contribute, we’d love to have you with us. Member rates and further discounts available when you book all 3 events.

Youth Justice Voices

It's been a busy month as usual for our Youth Justice Voices steering groups.

Youth Just Us have created 2 guides around challenging stigma, which they will be launching and sharing soon. We had some joint sessions with Youth Justice Voices North East, working together on some consultancy with the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (SVRU). We input into 'The way we see it' project and the resources the SVRU use in a variety of settings to engage young people around violence reduction.

We have supported the creation of the 'Everybody has a story' animation, alongside the SVRU and the Good Shepherd Centre, working with the amazing creative heads at Braw Talent. This new animation will be launching soon too.

We also remembered to have fun, and recently celebrated a group member's birthday by playing pool and sharing some good food together.

Know a young person who wants to join us?

We are always open to new members joining Youth Just Us. We meet every Tuesday at Staf’s Glasgow participation space - 2nd Floor, Edward House, 199 Sauchiehall Street (buzzer 6) from 5 to 8pm.

If you would like to meet our Youth Justice Voices participation workers before a session to find out more, you can contact katrina@staf.scot.

If you are a professional working with young people experiencing the care and justice systems, or interested in finding out more about what we do, we are happy to join your team meeting with an input. Contact katrina@staf.scot.

At Youth Justice Voices North East, we are also focusing on recruitment, so we’ve been designing flyers, discussing how best to promote the group and creating getting-to-know-you activities for when new people start, to make them feel welcome. We’ll be starting a new creative participation project once we have our new team Youth Justice Voices team members in place, which will happen over the summer.

Want to find out more?

Hannah is always happy to come along and speak to your team about the project, online or in person, if you would find it helpful. If you work in Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire, and you know some young people aged 16-25 with and care and justice experience who that want their voices heard, please email hannah.kouris@staf.scot for more information.

Free online trauma course

More than 1,300 learners have enrolled on our 'Foundations of trauma-informed, relationship-based practice' course, developed in partnership with the Open University in Scotland, with many awarding it 5-star ratings and sharing fantastic feedback.

"I found this course really good and easy to follow. Although it is focused on childhood the content applies to relationships in a wider context. It will be useful for people working in social care settings, healthcare, social housing, social work... especially for people new to these work settings."
Maria

"Loved it. Really informative with useful real-life examples. I experienced being in care as a child and I plan to use this knowledge to approach my clients and families in a more trauma informed way."
Jade, Behavioural Translator

"I will use the information I have learnt to be more understanding of a child's needs where trauma is concerned, and how best to support them."

Jasmine, Librarian and Wellbeing Officer

This FREE course is available to all via The Open University's OpenLearn Create. Participants learn:

  • What trauma is and how it can affect people’s lives

  • Why safe, trusting relationships make a real difference

  • How we can all respond with compassion, respect and understanding

If you would like to have a chat about the course, or how Staf can support your learning, please email dawn@staf.scot.

Steering Group and Consultants

This month, we have been working on the NLN Individual grants. We had to close the opportunity down after approx. 5 hours again due to over subscription. The team have been analysing the applications in team meetings or 1-1 sessions. We will be funding 64 individuals up to £500. More information the breakdown of this will be available in due course.

We asked some artists to propose a plan for the proposed NLN Resource (focusing on how we work) and have picked someone we will be working with. We are at the planning stages of this collaborative process but will share more in due course.

A good number of our friends and allies are interested in hearing Gemma deliver her presentation relating to her dissertation, titled: To Need ‘care,’ To Want Care. An Analysis of ‘Need’ and ‘Want’ between the Care Sector and the Care Community. If you would like to join Gemma on Wednesday 24 June at 2.30pm, please use the Zoom link below.

We delivered an online workshop to SCRA’s Corporate Parenting and Participation Group. This focused on Participation, Voice, Power and Decision Making. This is the second hour-long workshop we have delivered to SCRA. We are grateful for the opportunity this gives the team to plan, prepare and present.

This month, we had the pleasure of delivering a 1.5-hour long workshop, 'Shifting from Co-production to Production' at the Children in Scotland annual conference. We got some amazing feedback including one participant complimenting us on our 'radical' model of participation. The interactive session was led by 6 of the team in person, and featured JJ and Ash in videos.

NLN evaluation

Over the last month, The Lines Between have been carrying out interviews with various people involved in the NLN. They have also been analysing data that has come in via a survey link we shared with various friends and allies.

If you would like to take part in a survey as part of the evaluation, please check out the link here: https://online1.snapsurveys.com/NLNevaluation.

Partnership working

As always, we are working with various friends and allies on lots of different bits and pieces. We are in discussion about a potential work with Project Change. More info will be shared if and when anything develops.

We are in discussions with MCR Pathways about the possibility of some joint comms around promo they are doing on their ‘Trusted Adult’ work. Again, more info will be shared in due course.

This month, Gary took part in a YoutLink Scotland launch event for their Ethical Partnerships with Technology Organisations toolset, which aims to explore the tools and begin to think about how you might use them to support your own work in developing positive, ethical partnerships between youth work and technology sector organisations. More info can be found here: https://www.youthlink.scot/training-development/ethical-partnerships-with-technology-organisations.

CV workshop

We also ran a CV workshop specifically for NLN Steering Group members. The Steering Group had the chance to reflect on the skills and experience they had gained as part of their role with the NLN, as well as how to frame it on a CV or in an interview. Each participant received a pack, which included key skills and experiences they could include on their CV.

For more info on the NLN, please contact gary@thenln.org.
