Staf January newsletter: The latest news, updates and participation options for care experienced people and the workforce.

Dear Friend

Welcome to this month’s edition of the Staf newsletter. I don’t know about you, but January has on the one hand seemed to have lasted a long time whilst on the other it’s surprising to find us at the end of the month already!

It’s been great to get reconnected with the wider sector so early in the year. Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at Holyrood Insight’s ‘Keeping the Promise online conference alongside many of my peers in the sector; and next week we will be joining many of you at the Promise Scotland’s ‘Stories of Changeevent. We will be sharing the work of the ‘Moving On’ Change Programme and the 100 Days of Listening, which there is still time to take part in. Find out more here

Alongside many of you ,Staf has made a submission to the Care Leaver Payment Consultation, having taken some time to engage with care experienced people involved in some of our work; our members, and other organisations in the sector that we knew would have a similar interest in responding to Scottish Government, and we will publish our response in due course.

Here at Staf our plans for our next major event, the Staf Summit sponsored by Kibble, are well under way with many of you already signed up. It’s great to see so much interest in our theme or improving the health and wellbeing outcomes of care experienced young people. For those who like a bargain, you can book the early bird rate until end of play this Friday, 2 February. We’d also love it if you could join us for our February focus groups; Care Leavers into Employment Education and Training where will be looking at transition supports for kinship care experienced young people and apprenticeship needs (as you can read about below in the policy and practice section) and the Supported Lodgings, Supported Carers focus group which is meeting in person at the Staf space to look at updating existing paperwork in line with the asks of the Promise. You can sign up for any of our focus groups at our events page.

Tickets for our first Participation Network event are almost fully booked so if you want to join participation practitioners and young people discussing how we can redress the participation power imbalance then sign up today here.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are in the fortunate position to be bolstering the Staf team with some fixed term appointments. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to these posts and look forward to sharing the outcomes of the recruitment process with you.

You may be aware that we are working on a new website which will host the legacy work of the Life Changes Trust. Our Learning and Development Lead, Dawn is currently seeking input from future users to help shape and develop the brand for the website. We would love to hear you input, find out more here.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the new appointments to the Promise Oversight Board, including some care experienced young people we have had the pleasure of hearing from in our role as secretariat of the Cross-Party Group on Care Leavers. We look forward to seeing the work of this new, dynamic group of trustees.

Speaking of the Cross-Party Group, the next meeting will be taking place on the 21st of February at the Scottish Parliament and online. You can sign up to attend remotely or in person at our new CPG section of the website where you can also access agendas and minutes from previous meetings.

Thank you as ever for taking your time to read our updates for and on behalf of our members,

Best wishes,

Jo Derrick, Staf CEO

Youth Justice Voices & Inside Out - Care and Justice Experienced Steering Groups

Youth Justice Voices

It’s exciting times ahead of us as Staf advertise several posts to support the development of Youth Justice Voices and to keep the Promise. We look forward to sharing news of appointments soon.

For those who don’t know us…Youth Justice Voices is a joint collaboration between Staf and CYCJ. We are a national participation project for young people aged 16-25 with experience of both the care and justice systems in Scotland. We aim to creatively amplify voice and to influence change by running 3 youth-led steering groups; Youth Just Us which is based in Glasgow (but open to young people across the central belt as we cover travel costs), Inside Out which is based in HMP&YOI Polmont and YJV North East which is based in Aberdeen.

We’re currently planning what each of our groups want to achieve in 2024 but a common theme is to tackle stigma and discrimination. We are looking at a number of creative opportunities as well as focusing on influencing policy, as this month we are sharing our views on the proposed care leaver payment. As we progress through the year we will be planning more collaborative events as we look to create a national network of opportunities for young people to come together to influence change. I

f you are interested in finding out more about any of the projects, have a young person interested in joining or think you might be a good partner to help develop our network then get in touch with Youth Justice Participation Lead at Staf, Ruth Kerracher ruth@staf.scot

The Real Toolkit

This month's featured guide is for care experienced people Looking after your body and welbeing which contains a wealth of information, links to support organisation and practical advice.

Check out all the guides at www.therealtoolkit.scot

National Leadership Network (NLN) which Staf are lead hosts of alongside our partners at CYCJ, Columba 1400, Resilience Learning Partnership and Who Cares? Scotland.

Steering Group

A few of the Steering Group have been busy with the recruitment process for more members! Through the month the team have been reading and giving individual feedback on the many applications received. They have also been shortlisting and planning the interview stages. The group have asked the fulltime NLN staff to phone all individuals who won’t be going through to the next stage and talk to them personally.

From information gathered at the #TeamNLN gathering in Glasgow in December the Steering Group have been discussing the project’s priorities for the year ahead. Looking at all things funding related is top of the list, so the team are going to meet in person in February to discuss this further.

Consultants

The consultants are as busy as ever working on different projects. Look out for a couple of things hopefully appearing on our new website soon which have been produced by one of the Consultants.

Roadshows – the NLN will be going to Kibble in late February. They will be visiting two classes and talking about leadership, NLN opportunities and much more.

Cutting Aboot - NLN’s Active Travel Project

The Cutting Aboot team met in Stirling this month to talk through next stages of the project. The Stirling Champs kindly gave us their amazing space to meet which was really appreciated. As phase 1 is finished the team are now constructing the questionnaire for phase 2. If you would like to talk to the Cutting Aboot team about engaging in this research project on travel in the care experience community, please get in touch.

NLN Website

Although we have just launched our website, we have been making tweaks to it as we get more feedback from partners and allies. January has seen us add a ‘NLN funded projects’ section. This page details all of the seven projects the NLN funded last year. It also includes a 6-month update from Intandem’s Invoice project. The group made a short film to update the Steering Group on how they have spent their funding. If you have a look at our website and want to give us any feedback, we would really appreciate that.

Partnership Working

The NLN continue to be involved with a language project with our friends at Each and Every Child and Our Hearings Our Voice. The project is now titled Our Lives, Our Language. NLN staff attended a meeting this month to take stock of where things are and will be attending a meeting in person in Stirling soon to look at next steps.

NLN staff met up with staff from Aberlour this month to talk about all things relating to participation and leadership and how both projects can support each other.

NLN staff attended this month’s Participation Practitioners’ Forum which is hosted by Staf. The session focused on the health and wellbeing of people involved in participation work. As always it was great to listen to colleagues from all over Scotland and share learning from the NLN’s participation journey.

As always this is a bit of snapshot of some of the things #teamNLN are working on. If you would like more information on anything mentioned here, please contact gary@thenln.org

Member of the Month: Dundee City Council

We recently caught up with our membership leads at Dundee City Council. It was great to hear how things are going with the team and how they hope to learn from their peers by attending our focus groups and forums and taking part in the 100 Days of Listening. As with many local authorities they are constantly looking to enhance their throughcare and aftercare offering and we look forward to supporting them on their journey.
