Rainbow Crow
Nancy Van Laan retells this Lenape oral story about Rainbow Crow who lost his beautiful voice and colourful feathers by bringing the gift of fire to other animals in the woods. This book is a wonderful read-aloud story because of the lyrical text and chants. Rainbow Crow experiences struggle, fear, hope, sorrow and contentment - emotions that children will relate to throughout the story's telling. The colours and details of the illustrations are also captivating.

English/Cree and French/Cree versions of Rainbow Crow have been written by David Bouchard and include a multilingual CD in English and Ojibwe.

Haudenosaunee Principle
Spirituality is the foundational essence of 'fire' that is directly connected to the Creator.

Reflection Questions:

In what ways do young children express their Spirituality, their inner fire?

How can adults nurture this Haudenosaunee Principle at home, in early learning programs and classrooms?
Thirteen Grandmother Moons
The full moon in January is called Spirit Moon.

"The first moon of Creation is Spirit Moon, and is manifested through the Northern Lights. It is a time to honor the silence and realize our place within all of Great Mystery's creatures."

Taken from Arlene Barry's series of teachings 'Kinoomaadiewinan Anishinaabe Bimaadinzinwin', reproduced by Union of Ontario Indians/Anishinabek Nation.

All the Colors of the Earth

This book celebrates diversity. Colours of children are not black or white or yellow or red, but roaring brown, whispering gold, tinkling pink, and more.

This poetic and beautifully illustrated book by Sheila Hamanaka depicts the joy of appreciating children and people of all races. Like all of nature, the colours of people are found in earth, sky and sea.
