To our Spectrum Wine clients,

We are always on the hunt for perfectly aged older Bordeaux from top vintages that won't break the bank. That being said, today's offer, the 2000 Chateau Saint Nicolas from Fronsac, owned by the Chevalier family with a rich history that dates back to the 18th century, is the epitome of just what we are looking for.

The 25-acre vineyards of Chateau Saint Nicolas are located on a hillside that overlooks the Dordogne River, and benefiting from a unique terroir on clay over limestone and a microclimate that is ideal and similar to its Saint Emilion neighbors. The Chevalier family has been producing wine at the chateau for over a century, and they have become known for their commitment to quality and their respect for tradition.

We recently tasted a few older vintages from the estate and the one that stood out (other than the 1998 we featured earlier) was this bottling from the outstanding 2000 vintage. This was a year that all of Bordeaux shined in which the weather was mild, and the grapes were able to ripen slowly, resulting in wines that are rich, complex, and elegant. The 2000 Chateau Saint Nicolas is no exception...

The 2000 Chateau Saint Nicolas Fronsac is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from 45-year-old vines, two grape varieties that are well-suited to the excellent terroir of the vineyard. After harvest, the wine is aged in temperature-controlled vats and aged in French oak (40% new) for 14 months.  After bottling, this particular wine was aged in the estate’s cold cellars until Kyle and I selected it.  The wine is a deep ruby brickish color, with aromas of plum, spice, and cedar. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied and well-structured, with precise flavors of black currants, cherry, and tobacco. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, giving the wine a long and elegant finish that has many years ahead of it.

The Chevalier family takes great pride in the wines they produce. They are committed to sustainable agriculture, and they use traditional winemaking techniques to produce wines that reflect the terroir of the region. This beauty, at nearly 25 years of age, is a testament to their commitment to quality.

At a measly $15.98 a bottle, this quarter-century old claret is not to be missed.
