The Springvale Vineyard is one of red loam, shale, and limestone over slate bedrock. In such an impecunious, rocky terroir, the vines' roots struggle to draw water and nutrition, yielding small, concentrated berries and tight bunches - and, therefore, substantial complexity and concentration in the resulting wines.
