#SoulBlast - The Silence When Black Women Die in Pittsburgh Video Installation and Dialogue, Saturday Nov 9th

Saturday, November 9th | 2PM to 5PM
@ Kingsley Association
6435 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15206

We Are Here, a four-channel video installation regarding social justice issues, will screen segments, “The Silence When Black Women Die” and “Antwon- Three Shots In The Back” continuously Saturday, November 9 at the Kingsley Center in East Liberty.

At 2 pm, there will be a dialogue for Black women only discussing their concerns and the challenges they face living in Pittsburgh, once regarded as one of America’s most livable cities. The goal of the dialogue will be to address the ways Pittsburgh is not livable for Black women, whose lives are highly endangered in the city.

All women of color are invited to participate in this conversation that will be moderated by Tresa Murphy Green. Green is featured in We Are Here installation, along with acclaimed writer and designer Tereneh Idia, Ciora Thomas, Bekezela Mguni and State Representative Summer Lee. This is a conversation for the most ignored and neglected group of people in Pittsburgh’s history: Black women.

In light of the attack on Black women at a North Side gas station last month and the deafening silence from city officials that followed for five days, now is the time to gather and strategize to solve community issues, to fill a void where city and community leaders have continued to fail.

Created by Chris Ivey, a filmmaker known for his East of Liberty documentary series on gentrification, We Are Here is an immersive experience not to be missed.

“My goal with We Are Here is to foster inspiration in a screening environment that is conducive to constructive discussions led by passionate advocates,” Ivey said. “I have seen the immediate impact these stories have on others. I’m thrilled to be presenting the two most powerful sections of the installation again in Pittsburgh.”

We Are Here is an ongoing installation work that premiered at the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh in May 2018. The installation is being presented in unique community spaces and museums worldwide. Other sections featured in the installation include point-of-view interviews during the Unite the Right nazi attack in Charlottesville, Va., that claimed the life of Heather Heyer; this excerpt was screened this year during the anniversary of the attack. The screening was followed by a community discussion with Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer and President and Board Chair of the Heather Heyer Foundation.

About We Are Here: We Are Here is an incredible tool to enable the Black community, educators and others involved in social work and the arts to confront timely and troubling issues, within the immersive environment of the installation.

About Chris Ivey: Chris Ivey is an award-winning director who has a strong history of creating various works for personal, corporate and non-profit organizations – works that make an audience laugh, bring them to tears and challenge them to think more broadly on issues that can have a meaningful impact and stimulate creative change. More information can be found at hyperboyfilms.com.

The project is funded with support from New Voices Pittsburgh, a non-profit organization that promotes the complete health and well-being of Black women and girls in the Greater Pittsburgh Region, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Reproductive Justice is our innovative framework to engage Black women, femmes and girls in local, national and global movement-building for Human Rights, Racial and Gender Justice.
