#SoulBlast - TO BE BLACK, MALE & UNPROTECTED | A Virtual Speed-Dating Style Mental Wellness Match Program on Feb 18th

The Wellness Collective will have Dr. Tommy J. Curry as a featured guest for the return of its speed-dating style mental wellness match program-Mental Wellness Speed Dating. The virtual event, titled “TO BE BLACK, MALE & UNPROTECTED: Examining Violence Against Black Men and How it Impacts Mental Health”, will be held virtually on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 1 pm. Prior to the timed pairings of mental wellness practitioners and prospective clients, Dr. Curry will discuss the unique violence experienced by Black men and boys and accept questions related to the topic. All are welcome to this virtual event designed to explore the experiences of Black men and boys and connect individuals choosing to participate with mental wellness practitioners.

The event kicks off Year Two of The Wellness Collective’s Mental Wellness Speed Dating program. Upcoming mental wellness speed-dating events will explore other important topics while connecting community members to care.

About Our Guest Scholar-Dr. Curry
Tommy J. Curry is a Professor of Philosophy and holds a Personal Chair of Africana Philosophy and Black Male Studies at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests are 19th-century ethnology, Critical Race Theory & Black Male Studies. He is the author of The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood (Temple University Press 2017), which won the 2018 American Book Award, as well as the author of Another white Man’s Burden: Josiah Royce’s Quest for a Philosophy of Racial Empire (SUNY Press 2018), which recently won the 2020 Josiah Royce Prize in American Idealist Thought. His research explores anti-Black racism, anti-colonial resistance, and the sexual vulnerability of Black males throughout Western societies.
