The Legacy Arts Project, Inc. (LAP) will honor Pittsburgh elders during the 9th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards on Friday, November 13, 2015, 6 p.m. at the Kaufman Auditorium, 1835 Centre Avenue next to the Hill House Association in the Hill District. Doors open at 5:30, reception at 6 p.m. and the presentation begins at 7 p.m.

The LAP is dedicated to preserving traditions and history of African arts from throughout the diaspora and does so by learning from those who have come before while sharing it with those who will someday become wise elders themselves. This year’s presentation pays tribute to elders who’ve left a trail through their lifelong contribution in the works of art they create.

LAP executive director Erin Perry explains, “Their monumental works weave a fabric that tells the story of African American life in Pittsburgh. They speak tales of struggle and triumph, of a rich history of perseverance and the ability of people to transmit their collective memory from generation to generation. From the arts that they share to the inspiration that they evoke, this year’s recipients are distinguished in their works.”
