New Research Confirms SMART's Effectiveness

Comprehensive Health, New SMART Research, and Battling Unhelpful Beliefs

We're Here For You When You're Ready

Heather Clinger (L) and Laura Zeppieri work for Wheeler Health, a nonprofit agency that provides comprehensive human services across the state of Connecticut.

In this podcast both Heather and Laura share their passion for providing effective strategies for breaking into cycles of addictive behaviors and offering resources for individuals who might be coming from many different perspectives and backgrounds. They affirm SMART Recovery as an effective pathway to recovery, but offer a wide array of support tailored to individual needs.

INQUIRING MINDS...
How effective are "Second-Wave Mutual Help Groups" in alcohol misuse disorder recovery?

A recently published paper in The International Journal of Drug Policy concludes that support groups like SMART Recovery, referred to as a "Second-Wave Mutual Help Group (MHG), are as effective as 12-step alternatives for participants, "indicating that alcohol service providers, courts, and policymakers should consider referring to and supporting these alternatives."

From SMART's perspective, courts already have good reasons to make sure alternatives like SMART are offered as options since it is settled case law, and treatment providers need to offer multiple pathways as part of good ethical practice. Nonetheless, it is important that research continues to validate the effectiveness of SMART!

How does one conclude that being addicted is one’s just reward? Unhelpful beliefs . . . that’s how.

Unhelpful beliefs are ideas we hang onto (and often act upon) despite the evidence right in front of us...

Pendulums, Inertia, and the Slightly Inconvenient Truth About Change

[Guest blog by SMART facilitator Kelly Scullin]

Addiction, like Foucault's Pendulum, swings with a kind of frustrating reliability. Back and forth. Back and forth.

It’s the behavior that shows up on cue. The urge that arrives when things get messy. The pattern that—annoyingly—still knows your address.

Isaac Newton's first law of motion states that an object in motion will stay in motion with the same velocity unless acted upon by an external force. That’s inertia. Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion...
