Science + Kindness = Change

Carrie Wilkins is the Co-founder and Partner of the Center for Motivation and Change, a group practice of dedicated clinicians and researchers who rely on science and kindness to help people change. She is the co-author of the award-winning book and companion workbook Beyond Addiction: How science and kindness help people change that is based in part on CRAFT, the evidence-based treatment approach to helping families.

In this podcast Carrie talks about her immediate recognition as a young psychologist that she wanted to be part of helping individuals and families who are facing issues related to addictive behaviors, the need to fight stigma, how CMC helps create "conditions for change," and what it means to be relevant in the evolving treatment landcape.

INQUIRING MINDS...
Can tailored cognitive-behavioral therapy for alcohol use disorder help more than standard CBT?

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy principles and practices are a foundational aspect of SMART. In a new study by researchers at the Recovery Research Institute, it appears that "tailored CBT" improves outcomes more than standard CBT, though the conclusion seems to be related to participants adopting more active coping strategies, e.g. support meetings.

Making It YOUR Choice

Naltrexone was approved for medical use in 1984 and has been used to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD) since then. More recently, it has been considered a powerfully effective treatment in combination with psychosocial and peer support.

In this podcast we are joined by the researcher who first identified naltrexone as a viable treatment for AUD, Dr. Joseph Volpicelli (left) and Oar Health Founder Jonathan Hunt-Glassman (right) for a discussion of medication assisted treatment modalities. According to Dr. Volpicelli, the introduction of naltrexone into the treatment protocol essentially returns the power of choice to the individual seeking to make changes in their relationship to alcohol.

Getting the Most Out of Your Pink Cloud

[Guest Blog by SMART Facilitator Rick Kuplinski]

I remember a SMART Recovery meeting early in my recovery after having somewhere in the range of 30 days abstinent. I remember how good I felt; the best I had in years. I was confident that success was in my grasp, and was excited to share what I had learned, how I had changed, and how I was going to apply the four points in pursuit of my ultimate goal: living a healthy, balanced life again.

I also was grateful to be among my tribe; with others in recovery who I was sure were listening to my check-in with a compassionate, supportive ear. And that’s when I noticed something. Out of the corner of my eye I saw one attendee nudge another and audibly whisper “pink cloud.” Then the two of them then shared an eye roll as they nodded knowingly at each other...

Research Participation Opportunity!

From the study coordinator:

My name is Albert Tran, and I’m a clinical psychology graduate student. I also used to facilitate SMART meetings in San Diego. Please consider completing a 15-minute anonymous survey as part of our study exploring experiences in substance use recovery and SMART Recovery. Our goal is to increase knowledge that will inform the treatment and recovery efforts of mental health professionals and their clients, policy makers, current and future SMART Recovery participants, and the family and friends of those impacted by addiction.

You can access the survey through the link or QR code provided, and more information about the study is included at the beginning. If you know anyone who might have relevant experiences with SMART Recovery and substance use recovery, please feel free to share this survey with them. Your help in spreading the word is deeply appreciated!
