Thoughts & Inspirations Journal

Journaling is the antidote to what Socrates said about the unexamined life: it’s not worth living. While it’s probably best to not take this extreme view literally, it’s in that spirit that SMART is excited to announce that we released our own Thoughts & Inspirations journal to help facilitate an examined life.  We’ve filled its pages with inspirational and thought-provoking quotes—then left plenty of blank pages for your responses and self-reflection.

Consistent with our self-empowering approach, this journal can be your avenue to exploring your recovery and life in general. Spending time looking for truths and lessons in our own lives is not always easy, but it’s important. What this journal provides is structure and, hopefully, some good inspiration.

Life Beyond Addiction

Traci Buzzeo

Traci is the mother of five wonderful kids. She is a board member for Beneath the Shade Women’s Transitional Living House. Her father struggled with alcohol and drugs. She volunteers at River Haven Women’s Residential Treatment Center and the Tuscarawas County Jail. She leads three SMART Recovery meetings including a women’s only meeting for Beneath the Shade and a meeting at River Haven Women’s Residential. In addition, she leads a meeting at the Tuscarawas County Jail as part of their transformation program, which combines SMART Recovery and learning other skills such as budgeting, exercise and healthy meal planning.

Please note: although SMART refrains from using labels like “addict” and “alcoholic,” we recognize that when others describe their experience they may choose to do so. Thank you for understanding.

Book Review - A Scientific Life on Edge

Stanton Peele’s latest book, A Scientific Life on the Edge: My Lonely Quest to Change How We See Addiction, (#14) is a personal autobiography, an intellectual autobiography, and a detailed comparison of his work with that of many other authors and scientists, including Maia Szalavitz, Carl Hart, Marc Lewis, and Johann Hari. For those unfamiliar with Peele’s work, this book would be an excellent introduction. If you already appreciate him, the historical and comprehensive nature of this book (379 pages, plus 52 pages of online references) will likely be appealing. The references online are helpful and save the reader from flipping pages back and forth.

Peele revolutionized our understanding of addiction. Love and Addiction, published in 1975 and co-authored with Archie Brodsky, presented a new perspective on what addiction is, how it arises, and how it can be addressed. His insights are still far from being fully understood and acted upon, especially in the U.S. As this book presents in detail, more often his ideas have been ignored or attacked. As someone said, “the first one through the wall always gets bloody.” Those interested in a fact-based approach to addictive problems are in his debt.
