Inside This Issue
From the Desk of Mark Ruth,
SMART Recovery Executive Director
Highlighting SMART Recovery's Accomplishments and Efforts Over the Past 6 Months
How quickly time flies by! For my first Executive Director’s Column, I want to share some memories of when I started with SMART Recovery. I also want to outline some of the key projects and outcomes we are excited to have completed or are currently working on, with involvement by many in our SMART community.

I continue to be impressed with SMART Recovery as a 25-year-old organization. Thanks to the vision, dedication, and efforts of many individuals, SMART has come a long way and continues to make an incredible worldwide impact. I am honored to work with our Board of Directors, Central Office team, and the many volunteers and individuals who represent SMART, and to help lay the foundation for our next 25 years… and beyond!

Introducing SMART Recovery to Congress
An Overview of 2019 Outreach Efforts
We have launched a campaign to educate Congress about SMART Recovery, as the government seeks solutions to an addiction epidemic that is overwhelming America’s treatment system. Our immediate goal is to secure $2 million to support our plan to double the number of U.S. meetings to 4,000 over the next two to three years. We also plan to increase the number of online meetings to at least 100, making SMART support more accessible to rural America, where the opioid problem has been especially severe.

Over the long-term, we want Congress and all federal agencies to know that SMART Recovery can significantly contribute to the alleviation of this epidemic by helping people through our meetings and self-empowering, science-based program.

Volunteer Spotlight: William (Bill) M. Abbott, M.D.
Bill Abbott’s service to SMART Recovery illustrates the multiple ways that a volunteer can contribute: as a facilitator, educator, advocate and promoter. As a former surgeon and medical doctor affiliated with the Harvard Medical School, Bill and founding president Joe Gerstein, M.D. introduced SMART meetings to hospitals throughout Massachusetts.

Volunteer Spotlight: Hugh Delaney
Hugh Delaney’s impact in Baltimore and the mid-Atlantic region has been substantial and ongoing. In late 2016 Hugh initiated the BmoreSMART project to start numerous SMART meetings in lower socio-economic areas of Baltimore. He trained more than 100 professional counselors and peer recovery specialists as SMART meeting facilitators. In 2017 alone, BmoreSMART launched 14 meetings.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lorie H. (Hammer)
Lorie H. (aka “Hammer” in SROL) has been instrumental in sharing the SMART Recovery 4-Point Program® with addiction treatment professionals across the country through live training sessions. As part of this effort, Lorie was instrumental in developing our InsideOut curriculum, one of our On-Site Training options.
