Subject: From Aspiring NFL Player to Opioid Addiction to Role Model

An inspiring story of self-empowered recovery. View this email online if it doesn't display correctly
Dear Friend,

Hundreds of people die daily in the U.S. from addiction to opioids and other drugs, including alcohol. It is our mission to reach more of these people before it’s too late. To do that, we need your help.

Take DeSean Duncan, for example. He was living the American dream of playing collegiate sports and having the chance to play professionally. A shoulder injury led to a prescription for painkillers. Like many, the introduction and ongoing accessibility became DeSean's ticket to addiction.

He went through 35 different treatment and recovery programs unsuccessfully, until a case worker introduced him to SMART Recovery. The SMART philosophy and use of tools clicked for him. He discovered a new path to recovery and in the process discovered himself.
DeSean told us, “SMART Recovery gave me a way to discover myself - who I was, what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be.”

And who he's become is an advocate for youth who are growing up in inner-city communities and who need a positive role model.

“I look like them. I’ve been through their experiences,” said DeSean. “And I give them the hope that they can do anything they’re passionate about. They can be anything they dream to be. I show them the same support, care, and love that wished I had gotten when I was younger.”
You can read DeSean's inspiring story of self-empowered recovery, how he has found his passion for helping others, and the exciting and rewarding life that he's creating, by visiting our website.
Everyone deserves a chance to recover from addiction. But, just as DeSean found – even today – recovery options in many communities are limited. Unfortunately, many young people never find what they need to recover. At SMART Recovery, we are working to change that by making our self-empowering, stigma-free peer support meetings available wherever they are needed.
Your year-end gift in support of our Growth Fund allows us to expand so that we can give the gift of our self-empowering recovery tools to more people like DeSean, who can go on to recover and thrive, using our self-empowering approach.

Because there are millions more people who, like DeSean, would benefit from our program to regain their lives, we hope that you will consider giving the gift of recovery by contributing to the Annual Growth Fund before December 31.

With Gratitude,
