Jay Gibson Education and Outreach Fund Creates Legacy

After suffering an alcohol-related brain injury that led to Jay Gibson’s death in February 2018, his family and friends wanted to find a way to remember him.

In the months following their loss, Jay’s family and friends held multiple celebrations of his life in New York, Ohio and Texas bringing friends and family together to remember Jay’s humor(?), kindness(?) and love of music.

The donations of friends and family, made in Jay’s memory, led to establishment of the Jay Gibson Education and Outreach Fund.

Even though Jay didn’t attend SMART Recovery meetings, his family found SMART Recovery information in his apartment after his death. This led his family to choose SMART Recovery as the recommended charity for those wishing to donate in his name.

Jay’s mother, Lisa, said, “The family wants to make SMART Recovery more well-known and more accessible to people searching for recovery support that is grounded in science and research.”

She added, “We want to help others who are struggling with a substance use disorder to become aware that in addition to the well-known faith-based peer support option, there is a science-based option available for addiction recovery.”

All of us at SMART Recovery want to extend warm thanks to all who donated to establish the Jay Gibson Education and Outreach Fund. Donations will be used to spread the word about Smart Recovery’s approach and help those struggling with substance use disorders.
