U.S. stocks drop after glum euro-zone, Japan data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened lower on Thursday after data showed contractions in the Japanese and euro-zone economies in the fourth quarter, raising concerns about global growth. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 47.6 points, or 0.3%, to 13,936 and the S&P 500 index slipped 4.45 points, or 0.3%, to 1,516. The Nasdaq Composite index declined 9 points, or 0.3%, to 3,187.67. Among big individual stock moves, shares of H.J. Heinz Co. HNZ rallied 20% after the company agreed to be acquired by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway BRK.A and 3G Capital in a deal valued at 28 billion dollars, including debt.

BlackBerry, Cisco weigh down tech stocks

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Tech stocks mostly fell in early trades on Thursday, weighed down by sell-offs on BlackBerry Inc. and Cisco Systems. BlackBerry shares fell more than 4% after a filing by Jim Balsillie that showed the former co-CEO had sold all of his shares of the smartphone maker. Cisco shares fell more than 2% after the network giant reported a small sales gains for its second fiscal quarter and issued a forecast that was in line with Wall Street's estimates. The Nasdaq Composite COMP slipped by 0.3% to 3,187 while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 0.2%. One notable gainer was Angie's List, which surged nearly 30% following strong results and a positive forecast.
