Robust U.S. consumer spending buoys economic growth outlook
U.S. consumer spending recorded its largest increase in nearly six years in May on strong demand for automobiles and other big-ticket items, further evidence that economic growth was gathering momentum in the second quarter.
While other data on Thursday showed a modest increase in first-time applications for unemployment benefits last week, the underlying trend in jobless claims continued to suggest the labor market was tightening.
"The robust rebound in spending provides some much needed confidence that the economic recovery is continuing to build on the positive momentum of recent months," said Millan Mulraine, deputy chief economist at TD Securities in New York.

Stocks narrowly higher amid Greece, data
U.S. equities traded in a narrow range on Thursday after opening mildly higher as investors eyed ongoing negotiations between Greece and its creditors.
"We're going to be held hostage with our perception of what's going on in Greece," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.
Both the Dow Jones industiral average and the S&P 500 indexes briefly turned negative soon after the open, while the Nasdaq composite remained narrowly higher amid reports that the meeting between Greece and its creditors was halted "indefinitely."
