SITREP:

As of February 5, 2026, tensions between the United States and Iran remain critically high, driven by Iran's violent suppression of nationwide anti-government protests that erupted in late December 2025 and continued into early 2026. The regime's crackdown, ordered under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, resulted in over 6,400 confirmed protester deaths, with thousands more reported, severely eroding domestic legitimacy amid economic collapse and widespread discontent.

In response to the protests, Iran's nuclear program advancements, and broader regional instability, the United States has significantly escalated its military presence in the Middle East since mid-January 2026. This buildup, described as one of the largest in recent years, aims to deter Iranian aggression, protect U.S. forces and allies, prepare for potential contingency operations against nuclear facilities or leadership targets, and pressure Tehran into negotiations. Gulf allies have expressed concerns over escalation risks, with some denying full base or airspace access.

Iran has responded with strong warnings of retaliation, vowing that any U.S. or allied strike would trigger a disproportionate response, including missile and drone attacks on American bases, Israel, and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially involving proxies across the region. Amid these threats, direct talks between U.S. and Iranian officials are set for February 6, 2026, focusing on Iran's nuclear program, ballistic missiles, proxy support, and human rights issues. The Trump administration seeks a comprehensive deal to avert military action, though skepticism persists on both sides regarding outcomes.

The situation carries a high risk of miscalculation or escalation if diplomacy fails, with U.S. leverage from the military posture contrasted against Iran's credible asymmetric threats and the potential for broader regional conflict.

  • It is estimated there are thousands of dual U.S. / Iranian citizens currently in Iran.

  • The USGOV previously warned dual citizens to depart on January 12, 2026.

Virtual Embassy Tehran

February 6, 2026

Location: Iran, countrywide

Event: Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing. The Government of Iran continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran.

U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye.

Actions to Take:

  • Leave Iran now. Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on U.S. government help.

  • Flight cancellations and disruptions are possible with little warning. Check directly with your airlines for updates.

  • If you cannot leave, find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.

  • Avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.

Monitor local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.

  • Keep your phone charged and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of your status.

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest updates on security in Iran.

If You Plan to Leave Iran:

U.S.-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran on Iranian passports. The Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality and will treat U.S.-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens. U.S. nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran. Showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone. U.S. citizens who do not have a valid U.S. passport in their possession should apply for one at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate after departing Iran.

The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using the following options. You should leave only if you believe it is safe to do so.
