Supplemental Info:

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Kyiv, Ukraine
February 21, 2022

Location: Throughout Ukraine

Event: The Department of State continues to urge U.S. citizens to depart Ukraine immediately using commercial or private means due to the increased threat of Russian military action. The security situation in Ukraine continues to be unpredictable throughout the country and may deteriorate with little notice. There is a strong likelihood that any Russian military operations would severely restrict commercial air travel. Please see the Travel Advisory for Ukraine issued on February 12 for more information.

Actions to Take:

  • Visit U.S. Embassy Kyiv’s webpage to view the most recent safety and security information for U.S. citizens.

  • Regularly monitor local and international news and social media news channels.

  • Ensure travel documents are valid and easily accessible.

  • Review your personal security plans and always have a contingency plan in place that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.

  • The State Department recommends a COVID vaccine or test to facilitate your travel. However, the CDC and DHS have exercised their enforcement discretion to allow certain persons departing Ukraine to travel to the U.S. without a pre-departure COVID-19 vaccine or test. Please refer to the CDC and DHS websites for additional information.

  • Enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.

  • Regularly monitor the State Department’s website for current Travel Advisories. Read the Country Information Page for Ukraine. For additional information, refer to the Traveler’s Checklist on the State Department’s website.

  • Please see information on What the Department of State Can and Can’t Do in a Crisis.
