Crime and violence have long been associated with Notting Hill Carnival, the annual London street festival that draws over one million attendees. While the vast majority of participants experience it as a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture, Metropolitan Police data consistently records significant numbers of arrests for weapons, assaults, and other offences, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
In recent years, knife-related incidents have been a recurring concern. In 2022 there were seven reported stabbings or slashings and one fatality. 2023 saw ten knife incidents and around 272–308 arrests. 2024 was especially severe: eight people were stabbed, two died (including a mother killed in front of her child), and ~350 people were arrested. Offences included 72 for possession of offensive weapons and dozens of assaults on police officers.
The 2025 Carnival recorded four stabbing or slashing incidents, with arrests rising sharply to 528. These included around 50 for weapons possession, 55 for assaults on officers, numerous drug offences, and sexual offences.
Overall, weapons possession, assaults on emergency workers, drug offences, and occasional serious violence remain persistent features. Large-scale policing deployments of several thousand officers are required each year to manage the risks in the crowded streets of west London.
