Over the last two days, Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave, faced its largest migrant influx on record. Around 50,000 to 60,000 people, mostly young Moroccan men, along with some women and children, crossed from Morocco by swimming around breakwaters or breaching the border fence.
The arrivals equaled more than half of Ceuta’s roughly 83,000 residents, overwhelming streets, parks and limited reception facilities. At least 57 people died, many by drowning or in crushes at the fence. Spain has deployed military units and extra police; Morocco is using water cannons to push back crowds.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez blamed trafficking gangs exploiting a recent Supreme Court ruling that blocked summary returns of sea arrivals. By Friday evening, thousands of migrants had voluntarily returned to Morocco amid a lack of food and shelter. The crisis strained local services, sparked European tensions over Schengen borders, and highlighted ongoing pressures at the EU’s only land border with Africa.

Event: The arrival of thousands of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta and hundreds to Melilla in the past 24 hours may lead to unpredictable and dangerous situations. Spain has deployed the Spanish military to contain the developing situation, together with Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil.
Ferries between Ceuta and mainland Spain are currently still operating. For updated ferry information and schedules see the Port of Ceuta website .

Do not travel to the affected areas at this time.
Avoid any demonstrations which may become violent.
Follow instructions of local authorities if you are in Ceuta and Melilla.
