Angry motorists — known as “gilets jaunes” ("yellow vests" - named after the yellow vests required in every vehicle in France in case of a road accident), have been engaging in increasingly violent demonstrations protesting government efforts to target automobile pollution and implement environmentally friendly fiscal policies. 

This translates into dramatic increases in fuel taxes.

The current average price of regular petrol in France is the equivalent of $6.23 per US gallon.

It is expected that prices will continue to rise in the coming months.

November 24, 2018

Location: Paris and throughout France. Gathering points and routes in Paris include, but are not limited to, the Champs-Elysees, Place de la Concorde, Place de la Madeleine, Assemblée Nationale, and the Champs de Mars near the Eiffel Tower.

Event: It is possible that demonstrations by the “Gilets Jaunes” (yellow vests) may continue on November 25 and in the coming days. The group is protesting fuel prices and taxes. Demonstrations on Saturday, November 24 resulted in violent confrontations between demonstrators and police. In addition to the demonstrations in Paris and other major cities, organizers continue to call for traffic interruptions and blockades throughout France.

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations
  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep a low profile
  • Notify friends and family of your safety
