Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Minsk, Belarus
January 23, 2022


Location: Minsk and the rest of Belarus.

Event: The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to exercise increased awareness and vigilance regarding political and military tensions in the region. Concerning reports of further unusual Russian military activity near Ukraine’s borders, including the border with Belarus, continue. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid public demonstrations and to regularly reevaluate possible departure plans in the event of an emergency.

The Travel Advisory level for Belarus is at “Level 4: Do Not Travel” due to the arbitrary enforcement of laws and risk of detention as well as due to COVID-19 and related entry restrictions. For more information, please visit the Belarus Travel Advisory page.

Ensure that your U.S. passport is valid and has at least six months validity. If you are visiting or living in Belarus, and have not yet enrolled in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), we strongly encourage you to do so. STEP is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
