Supplemental Info:
Background
A suspected Iranian Shahed-type one-way attack drone crashed into RAF Akrotiri (red marker on the map below) around midnight local time on March 1, 2026. The UAV struck the runway and military facilities, causing only minimal damage with no casualties or injuries reported. Cypriot President Christodoulides confirmed the incident in a national address, describing it as a Shahed UAV. This marks the first strike on the base since 1986, amid escalating Middle East tensions after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer permitted US use of British bases for defensive operations against Iran. Two more drones targeting Akrotiri were intercepted Monday morning. The UK Ministry of Defence has placed the base on highest alert.

Missile Threat Caution US Embassy Cyprus March 2, 2026
There is information about a possible drone threat to Paphos [western] region. Do not come to the Embassy unless of an emergency. The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia urges U.S. citizens in Cyprus to stay alert and safe.
Actions to take:
If you hear a loud explosion, or if sirens are activated, immediately seek cover. If in a home or building, go to the lowest level of the structure with the fewest exterior walls, windows, and openings; close any doors and sit near an interior wall, away from any windows or openings. If you are outdoors, immediately seek cover in a hardened structure; if that is not possible, lie down and cover your head with your hands. Be aware that even if the incoming missile or drone is intercepted, falling debris represents a significant risk. After the attack, stay away from any debris, and monitor major news outlets for official guidance.
AVOID:
Areas near military installations, government buildings, or other potential targets Standing near windows or glass doors Going outside unnecessarily during active alerts
