The 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck near San José del Palmar in Chocó, Colombia, on August 10, 2026, caused widespread damage in western departments. Preliminary reports indicate at least 70-79 deaths, primarily in Risaralda (around 40) and Valle del Cauca (27), with many trapped under rubble. Dozens of buildings collapsed, including over 20 in Cali, structures in Pereira, and the cathedral tower in Manizales. Airports in several cities sustained damage, with partial terminal collapse at Matecaña. Quibdó reported significant building damage and injuries. Over 1.5 million experienced intense shaking capable of damaging unreinforced structures. Authorities declared a national disaster as rescue efforts continue amid aftershocks. Location: Choco

Event: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Choco Colombia at 7:34 a.m. local time. The epicenter was approximately 5 km E of San Jose del Palmar, approximately 150 miles from Bogota, where the quake was strongly felt. Aftershocks are common after earthquakes. The U.S. Embassy is continuing to monitor the situation.

The Colombian aviation authority has reported that flights to numerous cities, including Quibdo, Armenia, Cartago, Buenaventura, Cali, and Rio Negro in Medellin are presently suspended. In addition, flights are suspended in and out of Popayan because of activity with the Purace volcano. U.S. citizens should communicate directly with airlines regarding flight status and rebooking procedures.

Actions to Take:

• If you are injured, call 123 for immediate assistance.

• Beware of falling debris and unstable structures.

• If a strong aftershock occurs, protect yourself by getting underneath a strong piece of furniture such as a table. Stay away from bookshelves or other unsecured furniture.

• When it is safe to leave the building, do so.

• Contact friends and family to let them know you are safe.

• Monitor local news reports.
