Supplemental Info:
BACKGROUND
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil suspended in-person consular services starting Friday, October 2, 2026, citing unspecified security concerns. The notice covers Brasília and the consulates in Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. It directs U.S. citizens not to visit those facilities or other U.S. diplomatic sites for emergency help, and to reach a duty officer by phone or email instead.
Local reporting fills in some gaps. Publication O Tempo reports that the State Department directed embassy and consulate staff to work remotely from October 2 through Monday, October 5, the day after Brazil’s first-round general elections on October 4, because of an attack risk whose nature was not disclosed. G1 likewise said the U.S. government did not identify the threats behind the suspension.
