  • Target: Two gunmen deliberately targeted the "Chanukah by the Sea" outdoor Hanukkah celebration on its first night, attended by over 1,000 people, mostly families.

  • Casualties: At least 12 dead (including 11 civilians and one shooter killed by police); 29 injured, including two police officers and children.

  • Suspects: Two armed men (one identified as Naveed Akram, a Pakistani national); one killed on scene, the second in critical condition in custody.

  • Weapons and Devices: Gunmen used rifles/shotguns; multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found in a nearby vehicle and rendered safe.

  • Response: A brave bystander disarmed one gunman; NSW Police rapidly neutralized the second and declared it a terrorist incident.

  • Official Characterization: Declared an "antisemitic terrorist attack" by NSW Police, Premier Chris Minns, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
