Supplemental Info:
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is a high-security IndyCar street race on a temporary 1.7-mile course around the National Mall in Washington, D.C., held August 22–23, 2026, as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Practice and qualifying occur on Saturday; the main race (250 miles) starts around 1 p.m. Sunday. Organizers anticipate roughly 140,000 daily attendees.
Security Designation and Overall Posture
The event is rated SEAR 1 (Special Event Assessment Rating), the highest level for voluntarily submitted special events, comparable to the Super Bowl and just below a National Special Security Event (NSSE, used for inaugurations or the prior July 4 events).
Officials report no credible threats at present, but describe D.C. as a “target-rich environment” on a normal day. There is real-time intelligence sharing across agencies, multilayered visible and unseen measures (including tactical teams, protective intelligence, and counter-drone capabilities), and a heavy uniformed presence citywide.
Law Enforcement and Personnel
A large multi-agency operation is in place:
More than 500 National Guard personnel.
Approximately 1,300 Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers.
U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, FBI, U.S. Capitol Police, ATF, and other federal partners.
MPD is on full activation for the weekend. Steel fencing, concrete barriers, and other physical protections enclose the course and viewing areas (see the map below).
Entry and Screening
Ticketed fans (divided into “Stars” and “Stripes” viewing sections with designated gates) must pass mandatory TSA-style security screening with magnetometers before entering the enclosed venue. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Specific Metro stations are recommended for each gate cluster.

Airspace and Related Restrictions
D.C. is a strict no-drone zone. Unauthorized drone flights risk seizure, arrest, and civil penalties up to $100,000. Limited FAA waivers may apply for official race coverage, but private/hobby drones are banned.
The FAA will halt all flights at Reagan National Airport (DCA) on Sunday, August 23, from approximately 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (subject to change) in connection with the event and any flyovers. Check airline status.
