Supplemental Info:
An ongoing hazardous materials incident is unfolding at the following location:
GKN Aerospace 12122 Western Ave. Garden Grove, CA 92841
The facility produces aircraft components such as canopies, windows, and other plastic parts for commercial and military jets.
What Happened
Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) hazmat teams have responded to a vapor release from an overheated 34,000-gallon storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly volatile, flammable, and toxic industrial chemical used to make acrylic plastics.
The tank's pressure relief valve is failing, and the system continues to overheat. Officials warn of two possible outcomes: either the tank fails and spills the remaining contents (estimated at several thousand gallons), or it enters “thermal runaway” and explodes, potentially affecting nearby tanks.
Evacuation orders have been issued for a wide area.
