As you are well aware, the threat landscape facing the US and our interests abroad is one of the most complex and dangerous in the nation's history.
As we move into the summer months, here are the high points of the global threat picture about which you should be aware:
Tensions are high on NATO’s eastern flank. Ukraine and Russia continue to hammer each other as multinational peace negotiations drag on. China and N. Korea are contributing troops and armaments to the Russia's war effort. Russia has amassed ~40,000 troops and heavy artillery near the Suwalki Gap, threatening Poland and Lithuania. A similar buildup of forces is taking place opposite Finland.
Multiple EU nations warn of an increasing terrorism threat. Spain, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have raised their internal defense posture as a result. Just weeks ago, British and Spanish special forces rolled up cells preparing imminent strikes in London and Barcelona. A May 2025 vehicle ramming incident in Liverpool injured dozens. A March 2025 vehicle ramming attack in Mannheim, Germany killed 2 and injured 25.
Israel is hammering all challengers in the Middle East and has resumed military operations in Gaza. Most of the senior leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah has been eliminated. US military support for Israel has resulted in a dramatic rise in jihadist threats towards the homeland.
Iran has been warned to continue serious negotiations over their nuclear program or face a US attack. A massive buildup of US military assets continues on Diego Garcia and across the Middle East in preparation for such an outcome.
The government of Syria has been toppled and an interim president with strong links to Al Qaeda named. Counterterrorism experts are warning that large portions the country may once again become a terror haven.
Afghanistan is once again a refuge and training center for transnational terrorist organizations. Al Qaeda is reported to be once again planning complex strikes against the West. Multiple private sector intelligence groups report Osama bin Laden’s son, Hamza, oversees these efforts. And where was he hiding during GWOT? Iran.
Tensions remain high between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan following a brief but intense military engagement in early May. India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and cut significant supplies to Pakistan.
A great-power war appears inevitable in the Western Pacific. China is increasingly aggressive across the Indo-Pacific region, using its growing military strength to bully neighbors, threaten shipping lanes, and destabilize territory along its periphery. Beijing has promised increasing military pressure on Taiwan until "complete reunification" is achieved. The multi-nation military buildup across the region includes more than one dozen new US bases.
North Korea has expanded its nuclear and missile programs and regularly threatens their use against the US, South Korea, and Japan.
Australia has raised its terrorism threat level to “probable,” with the country’s top intelligence official saying the move is due to a homegrown rise in “extreme ideologies.”
And that is just overseas. Here at home, the threats are even more directly impactful to you:
A powerful car bomb exploded outside of a fertility clinic in Palm Springs in what the FBI has called “an intentional act of terrorism.”
A vehicle ramming incident at a street fair in Vancouver, BC killed at least 11 and injured dozens.
A New Year’s Day vehicle ramming attack in New Orleans killed 15 and injured dozens. An Islamic State flag was flown from the attacker’s truck.
The FBI and DHS are warning of the threat of copycat New Orleans-style ramming attacks.
At least two attempts at assassinating Donald Trump have shocked the nation and the world. Now that he is back in office, there remains significant concern that additional attempts could be made.
Multiple private sector intelligence groups are warning of jihadist cells, already in the U.S., preparing a series of high-profile attacks.
Al Qaeda is calling on all faithful Muslims to carry out strikes on Jews and Americans in retaliation for events in Gaza and US military support of Israel.
The Islamic State is calling for followers to carry out attacks on Christians and Jews in the US, Europe, and Israel.
DHS and the FBI warn that the terrorist threat against the homeland is high and that "critical infrastructure will likely continue to be targeted over the next year."
10,000+ active-duty U.S. soldiers have been deployed to the US/MX border to assist DHS/CBP/USBP in establishing full operational control. The DoD now patrols a strip of land directly adjacent to the border spanning 3 states. Most recently, the U.S. is publicly discussing the possibility of drone strikes on cartel strongholds south of the border.
Mass shootings are now a regular occurrence at malls, fairs, high schools, universities, and bars in both urban and rural settings.
Churches, synagogues, and religious schools are now also regularly threatened across the US.
