You’ve probably seen bottles of “100-year” or “50-year” Balsamic Vinegar circulating in the market. While the numbers sound prestigious, there’s something you should know: there is no legal basis for these claims.

According to Italian law, and the standards of the Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale, it is forbidden to state any specific number of years on a Balsamic label — unless it refers to one of the official aging categories. The only certified ages are:

  • 12 years minimum for Red and Silver Labels
  • 25 years minimum for the prestigious Gold Label (DOP)

That’s it. Claims of “100-year Balsamic” are not verifiable and often used as a marketing gimmick.
