Subject: Feast Day of Saint Gabriel, the Archangel

Feast Day of Saint Gabriel, the Archangel.
In the traditional Latin calendar, we fittingly celebrate today, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Annunciation, St. Gabriel the Archangel.

In pondering the love of this excellent servant of God, we witness the great generosity of our Lord; we see a superb model of evangelization; and we prepare our own hearts to take refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Whenever we celebrate the angels, we do well to appreciate the honor that God has bestowed on us to know and be protected by these holy and incredible creatures.

Saint. Gabriel, like all the angels, is a pure spirit.

Being without a body, from the very beginning of his existence, Saint Gabriel was directly infused with knowledge beyond our imagination.

Moreover he chose to serve God Most High from the beginning of his existence, and so, he is without sin.

How amazing is it then that we should even be able to know and celebrate this incredible being.

Yet, this is only the beginning of how Saint Gabriel attests to God's generous love.

Saint Gabriel clearly appears at least three times in Scripture.

First he appears in Daniel 9 where he prophesied that the Messiah would come in seventy weeks of years.

Then, in Luke 1 he appeared to Zechariah first and prophesied the birth of John the Baptist.

Finally and above all, he appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary and told Her of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In each and every instance, Saint Gabriel acts as a perfect messenger ("angel") of God as he tells of the Good News that Christ Our Lord has won for us.

As incredible as Saint Gabriel the Archangel is, he does not let pride get the better of him.

Rather, when he appears to the Blessed Mother, he recognizes Her holiness and so he hails Her as God's favored one.

Saint Gabriel knows that She is to be the Mother of God and the queen of all the saints and angels.

So as we celebrate Saint Gabriel the Archangel today, let us give thanks to God for His infinite love, let us share the Good News in an hour of confusion and discouragement, and let us take refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Queen of Heaven and Earth.
