Why? Because this is where true learning takes place - where it is integrated as a growth experience. Sound a bit lofty? Do horses really have growth experiences? It is clear to me that they do - sometimes a release of residual tension, resentment or concern, i.e long term or chronic brace, and sometimes a new awareness of what can be - in particular what can feel good within a partnership with a person (despite our predatory 'wiring'), or a feeling of expansion within their mental, emotional, physical capacities.
I put some deeper consideration into how this works and how to apply it. In this video I've offered some structure with regard to what "integration" is, what it looks like, how to recognize these key golden moments and what to do to mine the 'gold'.
Because that's the opportunity here, on a number of levels. Not only do you mine the most out of a moment of learning and new understanding between you, you also pave the way for a new habit - of slowing down and taking time with new experiences. This is a key part of building deep trust and is a crucial element in ultimately changing how your horse reacts when surprising things happen.
