America is embarking on what could become the largest investment boom in history. And the stakes could hardly be higher.
A recent study published by the Brookings Institution estimates that the United States could invest an astonishing $10.3 trillion in artificial intelligence infrastructure between 2025 and 2032.
That would dwarf previous American investment booms, including the construction of the railroads, the electrification of the country, and the building of the interstate highway system.
The companies leading the AI revolution are already spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year constructing data centers, purchasing advanced semiconductors, and securing the electricity needed to power them.
And this spending is accelerating.
But where will the money come from?
Until recently, much of the AI boom was financed by the enormous cash flows generated by America’s technology giants. Now, however, the scale of investment is becoming so large that those companies are increasingly turning to the financial markets for additional capital.
The AI revolution is becoming a credit-financed investment boom of historic proportions.
And that raises a question of extraordinary importance for investors:
Will AI generate enough revenue and profits to justify trillions of dollars of investment?
History provides some troubling precedents. Railroads, electrification, and the internet transformed the world, but investors nevertheless suffered devastating losses when too much capital poured into those industries.
AI could follow a similar path.
But there is another possibility that could make this investment boom fundamentally different from those that came before.
What if winning the AI race becomes a matter of national survival?
If Washington concludes that Chinese dominance of artificial intelligence would pose an existential threat to the United States, conventional financial considerations could become secondary.
The implications for the economy, financial markets, and investors would be profound.
The new Macro Watch video, America’s $10 Trillion AI Bet, examines how this extraordinary investment boom is being financed, whether the investments are likely to pay off, and how the growing national security dimension could change everything.
Understanding these forces could be critical for protecting and growing your wealth in the years ahead.
