Subject: GCC2025 - not quite the challenge I had in mind!

Hi Friend

When I cycled Melbourne to Shoalhaven Heads through East Gippsland in 2022 I got the idea to cycle the rail trails in October to look for orchids and do the Great Cycle Challenge that way. Last year was the year. This year was the year.

Events got in the way. Family events - sickness - passings - you name it. One of these events got me motivated to walk the 7 Bridges for Cancer Research in memory of my niece. An uncle should never have to do that.

How best to get on top  - ride the best I could. Walk a whole lot more and find an orchid on every walk. Got to say to walk 28 kms your feet need to have been inside those boots a lot more than mine were. Blisters there were - good news is they took only 3 days to heal.

The best part is I got to spend a lot of hours outside in the open - in the bush, on the roads, around the edges of Sydney Harbour. Gave me plenty of time to reflect on the challenges cancer patients face - especially the kids - nothing can prepare them for the journey

I was lucky to walk part of my walk with a man younger than me - who was 6 months past his 2nd cancer episode. One tough man - he walked 22 kms - we only learn how tough we can be when we need to be tough
