An Update From Resound NW

Have you ever had so much going on around you that you're not quite how to even soak it all up?

That's how I'm feeling right now.  Apart from the beautiful turn to fall weather happening outside and the return to fall routines and school schedules, we have such a delightful collection of news to share from Resound NW.

First, it is bittersweet to share with you that the tenure of our voice and piano teacher Nicholas Meyer at Resound NW is coming to an end.
Nicholas has been teaching as a private instructor at Resound NW for nearly 5 years now, and we've been so grateful for his beautiful voice and piano playing and his wise instruction for each of his students.  Nicholas will be headed off to other musical projects and endeavors, and we wish him the best in the next steps!

You will have one more chance to hear Nicholas perform at the Resound NW concert this coming Sunday, October 24.  (More details about that below.)

But there's more!  We are also thrilled to welcome a new teacher to our staff this month. Stephanie Smith is a vocal coach and piano teacher that comes to us with decades of musical experience and teaching. There are so many things to love about Stephanie and the work she does in her life - she's a virtuosic pianist and a vocal coach with keen ears for singing, but she's also such a fun, playful, and friendly person.  She's an intuitive, a comedian, and a concert producer.  She has toured and performed with an insanely impressive list of musicians.  The list goes on and on.
I actually first became familiar with Stephanie because I personally received coaching from her on my singing.  I was so impressed with her insights and guidance, and I immediately hoped that we would get to collaborate more in the future.  I'm just delighted that she is able to join our team and become an ongoing instructor at Resound NW.

You can read more about Stephanie Smith below.  And you'll also get to hear her perform at our Resound NW concert this coming Sunday.

In addition to have Stephanie Smith part of our teaching staff, we continue to offer lessons with the brilliant teachers Merideth Kaye Clark, Courtney Freed, and Claire Hudkins.

Apart from all of this, we've also a new SoulSinging class starting in November, a number of group classes scheduled so you can get the chance to sing with others, and a holiday sing-along concert in December.

Like I said, how do I even soak it all up?

We shall see, I guess!  Onward and upward!

Regards,
Daniel Buchanan

About Stephanie Smith
Vocal Coach and Piano Teacher

Somewhere along the way to becoming a concert pianist, Stephanie Smith fell in love with singers and discovered her passion for promoting composers and new compositions. After several decades of touring, conducting and producing, she is thrilled to live in Oregon full-time and embrace her love of teaching. Stephanie  promotes a life of balance that includes the arts, self-care, and stress reduction.

Born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (1998) from University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master of Music in Chamber Music Performance (2001) from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
As a full-time musician, she has enjoyed a wide array of music roles and experiences. Stephanie was lounge pianist at the 5-Star Adams Mark Hotel in Denver for one year between degrees. This is where she learned to converse while playing piano and even entertained the late Sir Roger Moore by playing his requested song, “Seventy Six Trombones”!

In the Bay Area, she served as Artistic Director for the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, commissioning “Halloween in the Castro: A Horror Opera” by Jack Curtis Dubowsky and the musical “Group Therapy” by June Bonacich. She has accompanied luminaries such as Alan Cumming, B.D. Wong, Sharon McNight, and got to play “Happy Birthday” and “San Francisco” for Dame Edna’s private birthday party in the home of Amy Tan. Too much fun!
Stephanie toured with Bugs Bunny at the Symphony as pianist/slide guitarist, performing with the New York Philharmonic in Avery Fisher Hall and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Stephanie has extensive experience in worship leadership and was Cantor and Worship Designer for the Sunday at 6pm service on the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral.

For the last 10 years, she has been touring with Broadway veteran Franc D’Ambrosio (The Godfather III/Phantom of the Opera) and had the privilege of witnessing and playing for the ceremony knighting him “Cavaliere” by the Italian government.

Stephanie aka “Miss Smith” loves to encourage and support local, living composers and has produced “The Music of Paul James Frantz,” “The Journey So Far: Music of Jeff Becker,” and “My Magically Talented Friends” showcase of composers in the Miss Smith studios.
This exciting and fast-paced career has been a total delight and Stephanie’s delight now is being home in her kitchen with a house full of dogs. Working at Resound NW with such a gifted staff is a dream come true for her. She hopes to help as many people as possible find their way (or way back!) to music, the arts, and a life of balance.

SoulSinging
Experience the power of singing together!

What is SoulSinging?

SoulSinging is an innovative group singing journey that is equal parts choir, singing class, and supportive community. While exploring exciting and diverse musical styles, this group empowers participants to be holistic, mindful singing artists. Focusing on the skills and attention required to create dynamic ensemble performances, participants will learn the potency of singing together.

SoulSinging includes the following:
  • Weekly classes with engaging group and solo singing and occasional public performances
  • Diverse musical styles rich in harmony, rhythm, and inspiring lyrics, such as folk music from around the world, classical choral music, contemporary pop, musical theater, jazz, and group improvisation
  • Opportunities to hone your skills both as an ensemble singer and as a solo artist
  • A supportive and safe cohort of people with whom to learn and take new risks
  • Extensive coaching from the Resound NW staff to work on your musical skills. The Resound NW staff has years and years of experience teaching voice and performing professionally. We have taught hundreds and hundreds of people from all walks of life to sing.
  • Observe the measurable progress happening with your voice and the voices of the other students in your group

Ultimately, we will learn that we are not alone. We will learn that there is endless possibility with our singing. And we will unlock the full potential to express ourselves through our voices.

We look forward to taking this journey together!

"I think SoulSinging is superb and Daniel is a complete delight as a teacher. I’m happy to report that this class was even better than I had hoped it would be. The instructor, Daniel, made me feel very welcome from the minute I walked in the door and the sense of community was very apparent as everyone seemed genuinely glad to have me there. I loved the warm up and the round of singing games that were played at the beginning of class. Everyone participated and it was a blast. Daniel has a talent for picking the correct song for your voice so you actually feel comfortable. The entire group is extra warm and supportive so that anyone will feel successful."
