Acting Through Song is a new class we're offering this year, taught by Stephanie Smith and acting coach Caitlin Lushington. This class teaches you how to use acting techniques to safely convey the story and emotion of the song you're working on (and what to do with your hands!). Great for singers of all levels!

Hope to see you at the picnic!

Sunday September 20th

You’re working on a song that means something to you. You can hit all the notes and it sure sounds good, but how do you bring the meaning of this song to life? How might you bring emotion, intention, and clarity to the story this song wants to tell? And of course, the question everyone wants to know: What do I do with my hands?!?!

In this class participants will learn how to apply acting techniques to more fully inhabit a song they are working on. You’ll unpack the text of your song and learn how to invest in the imaginary circumstances of your song’s story. We’ll explore nervous system regulation techniques for keeping you grounded and calm during performance, and you’ll celebrate and support your fellow participants’ performances with playful and engaging exercises. All levels and abilities welcome!

Sunday September 20th 2:00 - 4:30p

@ Resound NW

Investment: $50

"Thank you so much for such a wonderful class! I just wanted to share that you exceeded all my expectations as an instructor. I always felt like I was in good hands, and every time I thought I knew something you came back with so much more depth of knowledge and experience. I especially appreciate your intentionality around creating a supportive space adapted to our individual goals." -Nick Nielsen, actor

STUDENT/STAFF EVENTS

Sept. 8 - Oct. 20th

You’ve always been curious about acting. You’re looking to expand your confidence, practice self-expression in an encouraging environment, get out of your shell, revitalize your creativity, shake things up, recover from burnout, or wake up your inner kid – perhaps someone has said to you, “Have you ever tried acting?”

This seven-week course introduces you to foundational elements of acting, and highlights the ways these skills can transform your confidence, relationships, and daily life. Using games, exercises, and improvisation, you will develop skills integral to an actor’s craft, such as active listening, creating ease in your physicality, trusting your instincts, responsiveness to your scene partner, and communicating intention.

In the latter half of the class, you’ll apply these skills to a series of short, semi-scripted scenes that you will create based on themes or topics relevant to your own life. Together, we will explore how acting becomes a vehicle for practicing the personal and community transformations you would like to see in the real world.

This is a class ideal for:

  • Beginners with little to no performance experience.

  • Intermediate/advanced performers who want to learn to use performance practices for personal and/or community transformation.

What to expect:

  • Each class beginning with a check-in and warm-up.

  • Games / exercises highlighting particular performance skills.

  • Improvised or semi-scripted scene work (created by you!)

  • Closing reinforcements or takeaways.
