UK Government gives nuclear plant long-awaited go-ahead The UK Government gave planning approval on Tuesday afternoon for the construction of Britain's first nuclear reactors in a generation, writes David Sapsted. It was still not clear, however, if French energy giant EDF – the principal bank-rollers behind the £14 billion scheme – would proceed with the project at Hinkley Point, Somerset, in a long-running wrangle with the Government over the guaranteed price the company would receive for energy produced there. 'Stealth bomber' warning over short-term assignees The risks to companies' reputations and commercial activities are growing because of the failures of business travellers and short-term assignees to comply with ever-changing immigration and tax rules in the countries they are visiting, a seminar in London has heard. The stiffening of visa requirements, immigration restrictions and tax regimes in nations across the world is increasing the need for firms to become proactive, rather than reactive, when they send staff abroad, the seminar, in London's Canary Wharf, was told.

UK Government backs retailers in overseas markets The UK Government is backing Britain’s retailers in their bid to expand into fast-growing and lucrative overseas markets. Business Secretary Vince Cable launched UK Retail Industry International Action Plan at Retail Week Live, the largest annual gathering of senior retailers. The Action Plan was developed by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), in association with the retail industry.

250,000 extra school places needed in England, warns National Audit Office A National Audit Office (NAO) report has found that 256,000 new school places still need to be provided in England by 2014/15 to meet increased need. Although the Department for Education (DfE) has increased the funding it provides to local authorities and there has been a net increase of almost 81,500 primary school places in the last two years, there are indications of real strain on school places.

Noodle production switches from China to UK as offshoring loses its lustre A British company is moving its noodle production from China to the UK this summer because of rising production and transport costs in the Far East. Symington's, which makes Golden Wonder noodles, is ending contracts with factories in Guangzhou and Hangzhou provinces and opening its own production facility in Leeds in August, creating 50 jobs.

Britain relaxes immigration rules The UK has relaxed some of its immigration laws regarding senior executives and ‘elite’ graduates. In changes to the Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme, the British Government revealed that up to 1,000 international graduates with master's degrees in business administration will be allowed to stay on in Britain to work for 12 months after they finish their course.

Ernst & Young report predicts growth in Africa Africa on the move: quest for sustainable growth, a report by Ernst & Young, has predicted a continued growth trajectory for the continent. The report also finds that over the past decade, Africa’s GDP has more than tripled. In recent years, an encouraging economic environment, with significant reforms in macroeconomic management, improved incentives for the private sector, and a broadly favourable international context for commodity exporting countries, has spurred high growth rates in many African nations.

AstraZeneca to relocate 2,000 UK jobs to new £330 million global HQ in Cambridge Pharmaceuticals firm AstraZeneca is to establish a new purpose-built global R&D centre and corporate headquarters in Cambridge, UK, by 2016. The company says its planned investment of around £330 million reinforces its long-term commitment to the UK and underscores the UK’s global credentials as a key destination for world-leading biopharmaceutical research and development.
