Algeria siege prompts security overhaul

OilMultinationals have embarked on urgent security reviews in a bid to provide better protection for employees and facilities in the wake of the four-day gas-plant siege in Algeria, reports David Sapsted for Re:locate.

Scores of foreign staff have been withdrawn, at least temporarily, by corporations in Algeria and across North Africa. Aside from heightened security measures and improved contingency planning, companies are looking at permanent relocation of non-essential staff.

BP to repatriate workers from Algeria after In Amenas attack

BPBP will be repatriating employees from Algeria following a hostage situation in the In Amenas gas complex, Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed in the House of Commons today.

The facility, operated by BP and Statoil, came under attack by militants on Wednesday morning. The Algerian army attempted to take control of the In Amenas site on Thursday 17 January 2013.

Reports claim dozens of people were killed in the raid in addition to several hostages killed a day earlier when the stand-off began.

HS2 high-speed rail network is 'engine for growth in North and Midlands'

HS2 Rail LinkThe second phase of the HS2 high-speed rail network has been announced by the Government.

The details revealed that the preferred route running northwards from Birmingham will have five stops: Manchester; Manchester Airport; Toton near Nottingham; Sheffield; and Leeds.

The project is at the heart of the Government’s plans to stimulate economic growth and is expected to cost £32 billion.

Chancellor George Osborne told the BBC it would be “the engine for growth in the North and the Midlands of this country".

Cartus survey reveals relocation challenges for multinationals

Business TravelCartus’s 2012 Trends in Global Relocation: Biggest Challenges survey has found that country-specific challenges are the biggest concern for relocation managers at multinational companies.

The survey, which focused on geographic challenges in 11 regions around the globe, found that many of the issues impacted not only the company’s relocation managers, but also the daily lives and job success of their employees on the ground.

House prices show strongest annual growth for three years

House PricesAnalysis of data from the leading UK house-price indices reveals that the UK housing market saw monthly price growth slow in the fourth quarter of 2012.

However, strong growth in the opening six months meant that prices still ended the year up 3.4%, according to Assetz House Price Watch, which analyses house-price data from the Office of National Statistics, LSL Acadametrics, Halifax, Nationwide and Rightmove.

International experience is vital if students are to compete in global economy, says British Council

StudentsMore than in one in three people believe they would have a better job if they had spent time studying or living abroad, according to new research by the British Council.

This sense of regret is especially strong among under-25s, with 54% believing that lack of international experience has held them back.

The British Council commissioned the research as part of its work to help young people in the UK develop the skills they need to compete in a global economy.

CIPD finds business leaders and HR united on short-term priorities

GlobeResearch from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has found the short-term business priority of cost management to be a priority for senior HR and wider business leaders alike.

The challenge for HR is to balance the tension between responding to short-term cost imperatives and keeping longer-term people issues firmly on the agenda, in order to achieve sustainable performance, according to the study.

The research is based on a survey of 369 business leaders and 107 senior HR professionals.

BRIC nations 'to lead staff recruitment in 2013' 

BRICSCompanies in Brazil and India are expecting to recruit in 2013, according to an international survey of HR managers. 

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive for the global jobs company CareerBuilders, shows that US hiring managers were cautious about the jobs market in 2013, while the Italians were downright pessimistic.

Conducted online throughout November, the survey involved questionnaires to more than 6,000 jobs professionals in 10 countries: Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US.

London PropertyThe International Residential Investment in London report, by Knight Frank, has found that there is a new trend for cross-border investment in prime property assets around the world.

Movement of capital into residential property is most notable when looking at the key global cities, with overseas investors keen for a slice of premium real estate in locations offering more than just excellent investment opportunities.

The report investigates the factors that make London property such an attractive investment.

Davos tax-avoidance call sparks business fears

Calls at the World Economic Forum in Davos for international action to curb aggressive tax avoidance have drawn warnings from business leaders that such a move could undermine economic recovery.

David Cameron, the UK prime minister, told the gathering in Switzerland that Britain would use its year-long presidency of the G8 to press for a global strategy to ensure companies and individuals "pay their fair share".
