Social media, globalisation, and a multigenerational workforce will shape 2020 workplace, author tells HR Excellence Summit 

Washington DCBy 2020, five generations of employee will be working side by side - an increase on the four generations found in most workplaces today - bringing new challenges for employers, said consultant and author Jeanne Meister during a session of the HR Excellence Summit 2012, for which Re:locate was media partner. Our correspondent at the summit, Susan J Sala, reports.

Speaking at the HR Excellence Summit in Washington DC (18 and 19 September), Jeanne Meister, a partner in New York City executive development firm Future Workplace and the author of a book on future workplace trends, identified the three main forces she believes will shape the workplace of the future: social media, an increasingly multigenerational workforce, and globalisation.

KPMG survey finds more American companies are considering global expansion 

KPMG Mid Market Global Expansion SurveyA report by the KPMG Global Enterprise Institute has found that an increasing number of American small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) aim to increase their international reach. Importantly, the global designs of many American SMEs may require them to enlist them help of specialists in corporate relocation.

The report, KPMG's Mid Market Global Expansion Survey, is the result of interviews with 1,150 executives from companies based in the US, Canada, Brazil and Mexico, including nearly 500 US CEOs. Issues dealt with include plans for future expansion, key challenges and risks, and past successes.

CIPD launches Asia report ahead of Singapore Human Capital Summit 

CIPD Learning, Talentand Innovation in AsiaIn Asia, competition for people with the right experience and skills is similar to a war, according to a new survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). This revelation came ahead of the Singapore Human Capital Summit, held on 19 and 20 September 2012.

The report, Learning, Talent and Innovation in Asia, is based on data from 1,088 respondent organisations from across Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. It examines organisations’ approaches to learning, talent development and innovation, as well as some of the key challenges being faced, and current and projected budgets for learning and development.

Weichert survey results reveal key relocation benefits for attracting and retaining talent 

Weichert Relocation Resources’ 2012 Employee Mobility SurveyWhile business leaders remain preoccupied with economic uncertainty, their employees are getting restless.

A recent study by Kelly Services shows that less than half (44%) of global workers feel valued by their employers, and that two-thirds (66%) intend to look for a new job with another organisation next year.

Another study, by Heidrick & Struggles, indicates that companies looking to retain their valued talent or lure desired candidates away from competitors will need a compelling relocation package to make it happen.

UK inward investment receives funding boost 

Oxford Science ParkThe UK Government has announced that it is to provide core funding for Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), to allow them to drive forward their growth priorities.

It is hoped that the offer of over £24 million from the Government could unlock up to £20 million locally and enable LEPs to deliver their local plans for growth.

An interim £5 million funding package will be made available immediately for all LEPs to draw upon for the remainder of this financial year. This will be followed by up to £250,000 per LEP per year for the following two years.

MAC launches Call for Evidence on review of shortage occupations lists for UK and Scotland

Review of Shortage Occupations ListAs part of its review of the shortage occupations list, which includes an assessment of whether creative occupations should continue to be included in Tier 2 of the Points Based System (PBS), the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has issued a Call for Evidence.

The Call for Evidence document includes a list of jobs and job titles currently classified as shortage occupations.
