Re:locate: keeping you in touch
Welcome to Re:locate Extra – the e-newsletter that keeps you informed of the latest developments in the world of relocation.
It’s been a busy month for the Re:locate team. On 6 May, after a terrific build-up, the winners of the Re:locate Awards 2009/10 were presented with their trophies at the glittering Gala Awards Dinner. Click here for photographs capturing the excitement of the evening (you can order prints and digital copies now!).
The Queen’s Speech: what does it mean for relocation? On the day after the Queen’s Speech announced a raft of new legislation, Fiona Murchie, Re:locate’s managing editor, examines the implications for relocation.
As we sat down for dinner on election night at the Re:locate Awards gala dinner, little did we know how long the Downing Street relocation would take! The world watched as Britain entered a historic coalition government between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, who have now set out the terms for their first Queen’s Speech and subsequent budgets.
Below, we look at some of the areas that will impact on relocation, and we’ll track them in the coming months, as budget cuts deepen.

Cartus survey reveals changing approach to international assignments
A new global workforce is emerging from the economic doldrums of the past three years, according to a new survey from Cartus Corporation. Co-sponsored by the US National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), the 2010 Global Policy & Practices Survey: Navigating a Challenging Landscape explores trends across various types of relocation assignment, including short-term and permanent transfers, and illustrates how much the international mobility picture has changed from a traditional focus on long-term assignments (those of more than a year’s duration). The survey revealed that although 30% of respondents saw decreases in their overall assignment activity over the past three years, they nevertheless expect growth in all assignment types. Except for the most costly long-term assignments, companies anticipating growth outnumbered those expecting declines by a 6–1 margin.

The 2010 Hydrogen Global Professionals on the Move Report reveals that for 60 percent of respondents the recession has had ‘no impact’ on their willingness to move overseas, and 94 per cent are either already working internationally, or want to do so.

Language skills ‘are the key to flexibility within a global workplace’ A new survey by specialist language recruiter Euro London Appointments has shown that language skills improve employability.
Euro London surveyed 228 employers, of whom 86% felt that languages were an important skill set. “Languages are the key to flexibility within a global workplace”, said one respondent, a learning and development manager. “They have given me the flexibility to manage HR functions across Western Europe and train people almost globally. I speak Spanish and French, which has given me the flexibility to work in South America, the West Indies and Africa.”

ORC survey finds pollution and congestion top list of expat concerns Expatriate participants in HR consulting company OCR’s latest Location-specific survey of International Assignment Policies and Practices report pollution as their top concern in several destination cities around the world, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kiev, Mexico City, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou and Warsaw. In Guangzhou, pollution tied with traffic for first place; in Kiev and Mexico City, it shared first place with crime.
Says Geoffrey W Latta, executive vice president of ORC, “While employers do not usually have any specific policy to address these concerns, it is important that they encourage assignees to learn about local health-hazardous conditions beforehand, provide information on reliable medical facilities, and allow assignees to take a rest-and-recreation trip away from the host location for a few days or weeks.” More...
The audit cycle for Tier 2 sponsors Asma Bashir, of immigration specialist Newland Chase, clarifies the issues surrounding the UK Border Agency's audits of Tier 2 sponsors.
All Tier 2 sponsors may be audited by the UK Border Agency at any time, with or without prior notification. It is, therefore, important for sponsors to have a robust internal audit system in place in order to identify and remedy any HR system weaknesses that could lead to sponsor obligations not being met..
