Cost not primary factor in short-term assignments despite downturn, says study The use of short-term expatriate assignments is increasing among nearly half (46.8%) of the multinational participants in HR consulting company ORC Worldwide’s 2009 Survey of Short-term International Assignment Policies. This follow-up to a survey series that began in 2000 reported Asia-Pacific as the region experiencing the highest increase in short-term assignees, followed by Western Europe, North America, and Central and Eastern Europe.
More... Survey reveals what expats miss most about the UK Relocating can be an opportunity to immerse one self in a whole new way of life in a country where everything from the weather and language to law and religion is new and sometimes extremely different from life in the UK. Halifax International's recent Expat Mood Monitor – a survey of 1,000 expats living all over the world – looked at the things that people miss most about the UK when they relocate. Few said they missed the weather, but everyday things like Marmite, Marks & Spencer’s bread and John Lewis home furnishing figured prominently on the list. It’s rare to find an expat who hasn’t, at one time or another, craved the familiarity of life back home, and it can be just such small details that throw such feelings into sharp relief.

New guide details employers’ duty of care to employees on the move In the past year, more than 3.5 million international trips were made by employees, a quarter of which were to high- or extreme-risk destinations, according to a survey of 300 global companies’ travel itinerary data by International SOS. With this come inevitable risks – everything from illness to outbreaks of civil unrest to natural disasters.

Lower-than-expected rise in unemployment due to part-time jobs and an increase in young people staying in education, says CIPD CommentIng on the latest official labour market statistics from the Office for National Statistics, Dr John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said, “UK unemployment is continuing to rise, but at a much slower pace than earlier in the year. While this is not unexpected, the fact that the unemployment total remained below 2.5 million in the quarter ending in September is encouraging. However, the relative improvement should not be interpreted as evidence that the labour market is returning to health, with male unemployment and long-term unemployment continuing to rise and youth unemployment now at a record rate despite a surge in the number of young people staying on in education to avoid the dole. More... Are things looking up for the economy? Despite the latest jobless figures, signs of an improvement in the economy are continuing. Global information services company Experian’s Insolvency Index shows that, while the average business insolvency rate increased slightly in October, the UK’s business community as a whole is now at its strongest financially since July 2008. According to the latest data from Connells Survey & Valuation, graduallyincreasing optimism in the housing market is being reflected in an upsurge in the number of valuations for home purchase, with much stronger growth for homeowners wanting to move than for first-time buyers – many of whom still struggle to raise mortgage finance. This October, almost twice as many valuations were conducted for homeowners as last October, while, in the three months to the end of October, the number of homeowners requesting a valuation on their homes rose by 75% compared to the same period in 2008. Overall, says Connells Survey & Valuation managing director Ross Bowen, transactions were up 26% in October 2009 compared with the previous year, and up 13% in the three-month period (again compared with 2008).
