Discovering Irish Blessings Warm Greetings from Uganda, Friend,
Senior-2 students returned from lunch to "My Love" by Westlife. "Does anyone know this group?" Two hands went up. "They're Irish, singing about Ireland. What else is Irish?" Every hand shot up. "Irish potatoes!" "Anything else?" Silence. "Guinness beer—you've seen it here!" They laughed. "What's on the Guinness label? A harp—a clue that music matters in Irish culture. What about Baganda culture?" "Yes!"
Soon they were comparing cultures. Irish people are storytellers, social, musical, and love giving oral blessings. When I read one, they clapped! Catrina (pictured) finished early and asked to see my book of Irish Blessings. She read several to me.
The students' world grew a bit, and so did mine.
Thank you for being a blessing to these amazing young people, Elaine May your days be many and your troubles be few.
