Chiron Publications spotlights the writings of Carlos Byington this month. Byington, who passed away earlier this year, started his career as a cardiologist but soon felt that the calling to care for “wounded hearts” would be answered as an analyst and began his studies on psychoanalysis.

In 1961, he went to Zurich to the C.G. Jung Institute, finishing his studies there in 1965 with the work “Genuineness as Duality in Unity,” that was to become the embryo of his posterior work.

Byington was the creator of Jungian Symbolic Psychology. His theory synthesizes the ideas of Jung and Freud, including Neumann’s and Heidegger’s contributions. With a humanistic approach, he extended his regard to several areas, comprehending History, Education, Religion, Politics and Art.

Chiron is pleased to offer three titles by Byington in our catalog: Creative Envy; Education from the Heart; and Jungian Symbolic Psychology. This month, the three may be purchased at a sale price of $45. Please select 3 book combo in the drop down menu when ordering.

Creative Envy attributes an archetypal foundation to the ego defense mechanisms of psychoanalysis and describes the possibility of all psychological functions being creative or defensive. Analyzing Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus, Byington describes envy functioning creatively and defensively in the Mozart-Salieri relationship.

Education from the Heart, with many theoretical and practical contributions, is recommended not only for teachers and administrators, but also for parents and for those involved in the widespread and crucial debate on education.

And in Jungian Symbolic Psychology, Byington conceives the cultural Self and the humanization process to describe an archetypal theory of history.

Byington had an extremely active, creative and productive life. He was one of the founding members of the Brazilian Society of Analytical Psychology (SBrPA), lecturing in many different cities in Brazil and also other South American countries: Uruguay, Chile, Argentine, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru.

In 1980 he was awarded the title of “Recognized Erudition” by the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and in 1983 by the Psychology University of São Paulo. In 2010, he received the title of “Profesor Ad Honorem” of the Psychology Faculty of the Catholic University of Uruguay – “Damaso A. Larrañaga.”

In 2018, as a recognition of his life’s work and the propagation of Analytical Psychology in Latin America during 40 years, he was granted the designation of Illustrious Member by the Latin American Committee of Analytical Psychology.
Byington published countless articles and several books.  He was married to Maria Helena, also a Jungian psychotherapist, and leaves four daughters, seven grandsons and five great-grandsons.
