I I copied this directly from a bulletin I received from Revolut and I thought this was worth copying you in on. Scams are always harder to spot when they appear to be coming from a place of authority. Here's what Revolut said and I hope it helps to keep you safe:
It’s tax season, 'Tis the season to be extra wary
We know nothing gets you excited like all the fun admin of tax season.
But if you think you're excited, it's nothing compared to scammers and fraudsters. This is their Christmas and they come bearing a new way to get their mitts on your money.
So, what's the scam? Scammers and fraudsters will call you claiming to be HMRC. They'll offer you a rebate once you pay a fee, or by pretending you have to urgently pay a fine or you’ll be arrested.
To make it worse, these criminals can also change their phone numbers to make it look like you’re getting a genuine call from HMRC. They may even ask you to check the number online to validate it and build your trust.
If they call, what should I do? HMRC will never contact you over the phone demanding payment at the risk of consequences or ask you to make a payment in return for a larger rebate afterwards.
If you’re contacted by someone claiming to be from HMRC or the Police, hang up and contact them independently via the contact numbers listed on their official website.
