| | Finally! Warm weather and sunshine have arrived, and our golf course is in fantastic shape. We have reached our membership goal for 2019, and I feel confident we will continue to add a significant number of new members as the year continues, due at least in party to the addition of a Membership Care Specialist. The Board recently selected Art Craddock to fill this role, and he will be making sure our existing members and new members will be educated on the clubs many amenities, as well as helping match our new members with compatible golfing groups so to make their Pines experience that much more enjoyable.
Our Golf Professional, Russel Reid, is starting a PGA Junior League for members’ children 13 years old and younger. Under Russell’s tutelage, they will be competing in golf with PGA Junior League Members of other local area clubs. Russell is currently recruiting members for the team. If you have a youngster 13 or under that has an interest, call the Pro Shop for details.
Fundraising for stocking the pond and painting the clubhouse is going well! Thanks to all who have donated. If you would like to support either of these efforts, call the business office for information.
Fish in our pond for catch and release for kids fishing day is a terrific family event and modernizing our clubhouse with a fresh coat of paint will make our clubhouse more attractive and appealing.
In the meantime, I hope you are enjoying your membership and don’t forget the pool opens this Saturday, May 25th

| | Lean in to it for the “rough” one
I think we would all agree that the golf course is really in terrific shape. Mike and the guys have not disappointed in their efforts to have the best playing environment for us this spring and summer. As Mother Nature continues to work on us and bring some rain and warmer conditions, the grass is growing faster than we can cut it. If you occasional find yourself in a condition of grass that a bit longer than the fairway, continue reading!!
As we saw in last month’s PGA Championship, and with the U.S.Open coming up this month, what could be more fitting that a lesson in escaping the rough. This month’s tip is about how to escape those tougher shots that nestle down and make it a little more difficult to get the club on the ball.
When the golf ball settles down into the thicker rough, it is more difficult to strike the ball without getting grass between your club face and the golf ball, creating problems in controlling not only the direction but the distance the ball will travel. The effective spin on the ball from the groves on the club are compromised and therefore the height and distance that the ball may travel can change drastically, sometimes referred to as a flyer.
To combat this situation, we can change some areas in our setup that will help us to achieve better contact and thus a more consistent golf shot. – LEAN IN TO IT –
The next time you find your ball setting down in the rough try moving the ball slightly back in your stance and shifting your weight more to the front foot (lean in to it) at address. By moving your weight forward and leveling out your shoulders, you will create a more upward back swing, and a steeper downswing. Creating a steeper angle of attack on the ball will help to get the ball out of the rough. By moving the ball back in your stance you will create a greater possibility of striking the ball before the ground and getting less grass between your club face and the ball. This will help in be able to better predict what the ball will do when it does come out.Remember you should never try to hit a shot on the course you haven’t first tried on the driving range.
Good luck, Russell

Make sure you come by and pick one up for you juniors and their friends if interested. Having FUN is what golf is all about and by inviting a neighbor or class mate, what could be better.

| | ETIQUETTE - From our Pro, Russell Reid
Clean your spikes when you get out of the bunker before you walk on the green. The next time you are in a green side bunker, tap your shoes and knock the sand off the spikes before you walk on the green. It will keep those sandy foot prints away.
|
| | Fix your divots and ball marks I know that it is getting hotter and firmer, but with Mike watering, we are still having a lot of unfixed ball marks.
Golfer’s rule – Fix yours plus 1 other.
|
| | 90 degree rule with carts Even when the weather is good, get in the habit of driving in the roughs and on the cart paths as much as possible. The more that we can take care of the course, the more days we can go 90 degrees across the fairways instead of cart paths only.
You may drive across the fairway, but there is no need to drive down the center of the fairways after you hit. Go back to the rough. It will help us throughout the year to maintain our nice golf course.

| | | May 2019 USGA Green Section Regional Report: Poa annua is a prolific seed producer at any height of cut. The grass’ ability to seed contributes to its spread, and the seedheads can affect putting green smoothness in spring. Poa plants are also noticeable on bermudagrass fairways that are starting to green up. The Poa plants grow quickly, making them very noticeable within the much shorter bermudagrass.
Managing seedheads is necessary in many cases, especially on putting greens. Suppression of seedheads is possible with properly timed growth regulator applications. If your course is like many others in the Northeast, seedheads have already emerged. Once that occurs, suppression is no longer possible. Fortunately, some seedheads can be removed mechanically. Some of the most popular and effective methods to mechanically remove seedheads are brushing, verticutting or grooming. However, it is important to be careful with aggressively brushing or grooming grass that is not yet growing rapidly. Although these procedures will help remove seedheads, if performed too often or too aggressively, they can hurt the desired grass and slow spring development.
Several herbicides are labeled for selective control of Poa annua and broadleaf weeds in bermudagrass tees and fairways. It is important to control the plants with postemergence herbicides so that seeds do not spread with mowing and increase the population, making control more difficult next year.
If you aren’t on a preventive program for Poa seedhead control, perhaps it is time to consider one. For putting greens, ongoing research suggests that preloading Poa with a late fall application of the growth regulator Proxy®can help suppress seedheads. Timing is variable, but the most recent research shows good results with the following program: • One application after the last mowing in the fall • An initial spring application between 200 and 500 growing degree days with a base of 32 degrees Fahrenheit • A final application three to four weeks after the initial spring application On bermudagrass, applying a preemergence herbicide in late summer to early fall will control the emergence of Poa plants from seed in the soil. The University of Tennessee have examined several products for preemergence control of Poa. This summary video is a helpful resource for determining optimal treatments for Poa control in warm-season grasses. If plants still germinate, waiting until the bermudagrass is dormant and applying a nonselective herbicide will clean the rest of the plants up. Poa annua is a frustrating plant to control because it is so prolific. That doesn’t mean that suppression isn’t possible or warranted in various instances, especially on putting greens if the desired grass is something other than Poa. Continue to mechanically remove seedheads this spring and plan for preventive programs this fall and winter.

| Poa annua seedheads on putting greens can affect surface smoothness and ball roll. Controlling them before they emerge reduces playability issues and helps the turf conserve energy. |
