The Pines Country Club Newsletter          July 2019
At long last summer is upon us and, the forecasters are finally predicting less wet weather. The course is in fantastic condition thanks to the efforts of Mike Bogroff and his crew. Mike will soon be posting daily stimpmeter readings on the first tee to give us all a better idea of green speeds as we start our rounds.

On another note, we will be enforcing the proper golf attire requirements set forth in our rules and regulations. “Proper golf attire” means collared shirts or mock turtlenecks for men. NO denim wear, jogging attire, tank tops, t-shirts, sweat shirts, or halter tops are permitted.
Please inform your guests of these policies so that our staff and board do not have to.

Finally, please refrain from cleaning your shoes in the parking lot. The mess has to be cleaned up by the grounds crew regularly. It looks bad, and costs money to keep cleaning the parking lot. We could better spend this money otherwise. The air compressor has been replaced and the shoe cleaning station in front of the clubhouse is operational again for your convenience.

Thanks for your consideration, and hit ‘em straight.

Steve LaCagnin
The Stimpmeter is a device used to measure the speed of a golf course putting green by applying a known force to a golf ball and measuring the distance traveled in feet.

Rock it and Roll it
With The Pine’s Country Club greens regaining the glory from years past, putting will once again be the ultimate test to posting a great score. This month’s tip will hopefully help you understand how to read and roll your putts more consistently close or in the hole.
Green Reading – Where do I aim this putt? Is it going to break right to left or left to right, I just don’t see that slope. These are all questions that we have asked ourselves, or to someone else, and for those of us who struggle with seeing the slope in the greens, maybe this will help.
Read it - Reading greens should always start before you get on the green. Most people wait till they are behind their golf ball before they start trying to figure out which way the green is sloped. If you start to look at the green as you are approaching it, you may see better the high and low spots. Balls are always going to go the same way the water would go, so if you start to figure out where the high and low spot of the green are, it will help you figure out which way the ball is going to go. I always think the first thing you should look for is whether you have an uphill or downhill putt before you start looking at left or right. The reason is due to the speed you are going to putt. If you have an uphill putt you are more inclined to hit the putt a little harder and balls rolling faster will not turn as much. Therefore pay more attention to the slope around the hole where the ball will be slowing down and turning more. If you have a downhill putt and you have to hit it easier, you probably want to play more break, since balls rolling slower will turn more. With our greens getting faster, paying attention to the slopes, both up and down, and side to side will be more important than ever.

Roll it. – If you have ever played golf with Frank Tatta, JD Gump, Mark Johnson, Bob Hill, Wyn Johnson or Sam Bonasso, you have seen players that know how to ROLL a putt. Not smacking at a putt or hitting a putt will make all the difference in getting the ball in the hole. You may be the best green reader in the world, but if you can’t start the ball on the line that you read, you won’t get it in. The feeling of rolling the ball toward the target vs. hitting it toward the target will certainly help you with distance control, and getting the ball on the right line of the target. Whether you are an arc swinger or a believer in the pendulum putt, you still need to keep your hands soft and feel the putter making a smooth accelerated stroke. Try putting sometimes (on the putting green preferably) with your eyes closed, see if you can “feel” the ball rolling off your putter head.
Best of Luck!!!
Russell

We have started our summer clinics, and if you missed June, don’t wait for August. We have spots for you now!! July 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th. Short game challenges, full swing fun, and on-course scrambles. If you want to have fun and learn a thing or two, come join us this month!!! Having FUN is what golf is all about and by inviting a neighbor or classmate, what could be better.

Remember that we have our junior tee markers out, and there isn’t a better way to learn how to play golf than to learn how to make 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s. Playing from age appropriate tee markers and yardage is the best way to get off to the right start. Go get’em.

Summer Pool Fun!!
The pool has been busy this summer.
We recently hosted a Members’ Family Pool Party on June 22nd with a DJ, kids’ games, lots of food, and good fun all around.

We welcome Becky Oxman on board as Pool Manager, along with an excellent lifeguard staff. Becky brings years of experience to the job, in both lifeguarding and management. We’ve had many compliments on the pool staff’s courtesy and responsiveness, so the 2019 season is on track to be an enjoyable one for our golf and pool patrons.

Kelsey Kinnamon, one of our former guards, has done an awesome job of organizing, training, and leading our lifeguards in swim lesson techniques, as well as student progress tracking. The swim lessons have proven very popular again this year, as we have a full roster for June and only a couple of spots left for the July session.
Everyone had a Great time at our Parent / Child Tournament; Winners were everyone!!
1st place was a tie between Jon and Adam Argabrite and Chas and Sam Stanley.

Look out for a fall Parent-Child event!!
June was a busy month for golf and social events!
This year’s Member-Member Event was a sellout!

If you missed out, “YOU MISSED OUT!” Congratulations to the winners. Russell sends a big thank-you to Mike and his staff and to all the participants. A great weekend was had by all.

What a great night for a concert!

We couldn’t have asked for better weather to enjoy a wonderful night of music, family & friends, good food and a fun time.

If you missed this night of fun, mark your calendar for the next Rick K Concert on July 27th at 7pm
PGA Junior League
Our PGA Junior League team is off and running. We have had a few practices, and just like the PGA Tour slogan…..”These guys are GOOD”. We have 11 team members and are so excited about playing our neighboring clubs in our matches. We have home matches on June 24th at 6:00, July 15th at 5:00 and July 29th at 5:00. If you want to put a smile on your face, come out one evening and watch the excitement and fun these kids generate!!
Upcoming Golf Events
Please remember to visit our website for up to date information. Tournament and Club information is posted weekly on the NewsBlast page and the Calendar of events has a complete schedule of all the events at the Pines.
Now that the season is in high gear, my staff and I have a very busy schedule planned ahead for the next 30 days. I've listed some of the practices that will be performed, all in an attempt to provide the best conditions possible for both aesthetics and for playability.

 Unwanted woody plants around the main pond will be removed

 Fairways will be brushed then followed up with a side-to-side mow that will prevent the bentgrass from forming grain

 Approaches will be top dressed with sand to dilute organic matter and firm the playing surface

 A solid deep tine aerification will be performed on greens to improve drainage, relieve compaction and increase oxygen/gas exchange in the soil

 Greens will be verticut twice, one time with a light sand topdressing and one time without

All of these practices will be performed with very little disruption to play.

Please remember to only use the divot sand on the tees and fairways. If it's used on divots in the rough the bentgrass seed in the sand will germinate and contaminate the desirable turf in the rough.

Thanks!!
Mike Bogroff

Are you interested in learning more about Course Maintenance?
This season I am holding a three part series titled Grassroots. The purpose is to provide insight to any member who is interested in learning about the agronomical aspects of maintaining golf course conditions and to demonstrate some of the tools used to achieve these goals. The first session will be held on Monday, July 15 at 8:00 am on #18 green and we will discuss green speeds and the stimpmeter.

Hope to see you there!

Girls just wanna have fun!!
This was the theme of the PWGA Invitational to support the Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center. We had 17 teams made up of 64 golfers. Ladies came from as far around as Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Glenville, and Oakland! The event held raffles, and contests such as the longest marshmallow drive! I guess girls really do just wanna have fun!
We want to send a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard on making this event the success that it was. The tournament committee consisted of Wyn Johnson & Cheryl Hook Co-Chairs, Donna Shaffron, Gwen Gill, Irene Muffly, Margaret Roberts, and Susie Fisher. As a result of everyone’s hard work and generous donations from our hole sponsors, we were able to send $2,000.00 to the Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center!
