Subject: You Will Be Blessed

Pilgrim Update
A note from Pastor Kristian:

You will be blessed, says Jesus (Luke 14:14)... why does Jesus say this? Will our blessings come when we give a lot of money to the church? Because we believe the right things?

Join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. as we explore what it means to be blessed, and to live our lives as a blessing to our family, friends, and world.

Have a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend!

Pastor Kristian

End of Summer at Pilgrim
It’s officially the end of summer at Pilgrim Church on Sunday, September 8th. That’s when we’ll return to our usual schedule, with worship services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Take The MYT Challenge!
In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells us the parable of the talents.  The master gives his servants talents, and expects that they will be multiplied.   In order to celebrate all the gifts we’ve been given, on Sunday, September 8th, Pastor Kristian will be giving out 10 gifts of $25 and 5 gifts of $50.  The challenge: multiply the gift and bring back the talents on October 27th (Reformation Sunday).  Be creative!  Let’s celebrate the many ways God inspires us to invest time, talent, and treasure!

School Starts on Tuesday!
After a busy summer, Pilgrim School is ready for another year of learning and growing. School opens on Tuesday, September 3rd Teachers see students for half-day with dismissal at 11:45 a.m. Early Bird and Pilgrim After School (PAS) start Tuesday, too, for parents who need child-care. Wednesday, September 4th, is our first full day of school. We are celebrating our first chapel of the year on Wednesday at 10:10 a.m. (please note time change). Please remember the need to keep the fire lane clear on Cullom during school hours. Pilgrim is always grateful to volunteers who share their time, talent and treasure at school. Please contact the school office if you would like to help.

Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
Throughout the summer, we've been exploring the habits the early church adopted in Acts 2. We've been bringing some of the content and feedback we received through the “40 Days to Shape our Future” during Lent. This exploration will resume in September, when we’ll be lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

September 8th—Lift up Academic Excellence with a Heart
September 15th—(Block Party Sunday) Mpower Homes for Faith Formation
September 22nd—Preach on Mission Statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. (GPS)
Congregational Forum on the Core Values (after service)
September 29th—Congregational Meeting to approve core values

Please continue to consider the areas of inclusion of children and youth, and justice for the vulnerable which were emphasized at worship this summer as you reflect on the question: What are the habits are we as Pilgrim going to form as we see the Holy Spirit move within us?

Launching Confirmation
Do you know anybody entering 7th or 8th grade? Would they enjoy growing in their faith with people their age? Please invite them to check out Pilgrims Head2Heart Confirmation Program. Join us on Thursday, September 12th at 5:15 p.m. at the parsonage (4332 N. Winchester Ave.) for a Confirmation Info Dinner. Pastor Kristian will be share the basics of confirmation and how to enroll your young people if interested. For ?’s or more information, please contact Pastor Kristian at 773-990-0813 or at

Dominick’s Gives Back to Schools
Have you ever noticed the yellow "10% Back to School"  labels on the shelves at Dominick's in August and September? These labels show you which products are included in the  promotion which Dominick's runs to benefit our schools.  Please register your Dominick's loyalty card online at or give the number to Anne Barsano. Every time you shop at Dominick's a % of your order goes to Pilgrim. The promotion totals  show up on your receipt in late September and October. You may give those (and also ones from friends, relatives and neighbors) to Anne for credit, even if you are not registered. This is a simple and mindless way to earn extra funds for Pilgrim!!  The promotion runs through the 2nd week of September!
Our Prayer for Sunday
O God, you resist those who are proud and give grace to those who are humble. Give us the humility of your Son, that we may embody the generosity of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Proverbs 25:6-7: The book of Proverbs is a part of a collection of writings known as wisdom literature. Wisdom literature gave directions to Israel’s leaders and people for the conduct of daily life. Today’s reading is about humility.

The Psalm is Psalm 112:The righteous are merciful and full of compassion. (Ps, 112:4)

The second reading is Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16: The conclusion of the letter to the Hebrews contains suggestions for the conduct of a holy life, all of which are shaped by God’s love toward us in Jesus Christ.

The Gospel iLuke 14:1, 7-14: Jesus observes guests jockeying for position at the table. He uses the opportunity to teach his hearers to choose humility rather than self-exaltation. Jesus also makes an appeal for hosts to mimic God’s gracious hospitality to the poor and the broken.
