Subject: Write the Vision

Pilgrim Update
A note from Pastor Kristian:

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we build toward a Habakkuk 2:2 moment: to "write the vision, and make it plain". We'll be lifting up the proposed mission statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. This is an exciting time for Pilgrim, come be a part of what God is doing to renew our church and our ministry in the community!

Pastor Kristian

Welcome Baby Jacoby!
There is a new little member of the Pilgrim community: Jacoby Alexander Dickerson, 6 lbs. 15.5 oz., 19.5 inches., was born on September 6th. The proud parents are Tarah and Clay; Jacoby’s new big brother is Lukas.
Youth Night at Chicago Tabernacle
All junior high and senior high youth are invited to join Pastor Kristian in attending youth night at Chicago Tabernacle on Friday, September 27th at 6 p.m. Chicago Tabernacle’s youth ministry is led by Pilgrim alumni Jake Sparlin. Please meet at the parsonage (4332 N. Winchester Ave.) at 6 p.m. for rides over to Chicago Tabernacle (4201 N. Troy).
Chaplain Karl to Afghanistan
Army Chaplain Karl Redelsheimer has traveled through Kandahar and is now at his base in Afghanistan, with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He travels around the area visiting different platoons; mail can be sent to this address and will be held if he’s not there:

CH (CPT)  Redelsheimer, Karl N.
2/2 CR, HHD, Staff Platoon
FOB Frontenac
APO AE  09380  USA

As a chaplain, he gives things out to soldiers, like candy, so if anyone wants to send wrapped candy or cards from kids “thanking a soldier”, Chaplain Karl will be able to pass that out to other soldiers as he visits them. Anyone who sends a package would need to fill out a customs form, and there are limits on what can be sent—no pork products, for example! And of course, he will also enjoy hearing from the folks at Pilgrim! His wife Kim has requested the prayers of the Pilgrim community for him and for his family during this time.

Barbara DeGraff Retirement
It with sadness that we announce that our beloved Administrative Secretary Barbara DeGraff has announced her decision to retire, effective November 1, 2013.  Barbara has served on staff at Pilgrim since 2006, and her work has greatly advanced the mission and ministry of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School.   We are grateful for her superb work in the areas of bookkeeping, communications, bulletins and announcements, and so much more.   Please mark your calendars... we will be honoring Barbara with words and prayers of gratitude on Sunday, October 13th, to give thanks for her seven years of exemplary service.

Dining Group at Ignotz Ristorante
The dining group will enjoy Italian food on Sunday, September 22nd, 5:30 p.m. at Ignotz Ristorante, 2421 S. Oakley in Chicago. Enjoy old-world Italian cuisine in an old Chicago speakeasy-style establishment. Ignotz Ristorante offers a classic Italian menu and is known for its thin crust pizza and veal dishes. Call Julie Lea, 773-764-3140, if you’d like to join the fun!

Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
We are lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

In Christ's love, we gather, prepare,
 and send all as leaders
for God's mission in the world.  (GPS)

As a learning and serving community, we :

Praise God with all generations together
Invite everyone to be present together in Christ
Lift up academic excellence with a heart,
Grow in prayer and in the Word,
Respond by advocating justice for the vulnerable,
Invest time, talent, and resources generously, and
Mpower homes for faith formation
We invite you to join us for a special congregational forum in Maring Hall following the 10:30 a.m. service on September 22nd to discuss how this mission statement and core practices would be used to shape our ministry going forward. Then, on Sunday, September 29th, we’ll be having a special congregational meeting to vote on the proposed Mission Statement and Core Practices.

Our Prayer for Sunday
Benevolent, merciful God: When we are empty, fill us. When we are weak in faith, strengthen us. When we are cold in love, warm us, that with fervor we may love our neighbors and serve them for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4: Injustice and violence in the time leading up to the Babylonian exile move this prophet to lament: How can a good and all-powerful God see evil in the world and seemingly remain indifferent? God answers by proclaiming that the wicked will perish, but the righteous will live by faith.

The Psalmody is Psalm 37:1-9: Commit your way to the Lord; put your trust in the Lord.

The second reading is 2 Timothy 2:1-7: This message written from Paul to Timothy is a personal message of encouragement. In the face of hardship and persecution, Timothy is reminded that his faith is a gift of God. He is encouraged to exercise that faith with the help of the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel iLuke 17:5-10: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus instructs his followers about the power of faith and the duties of discipleship. He calls his disciples to adopt the attitude of servants whose actions are responses to their identity rather than works seeking reward.
