Pilgrim Update
November 23, 2014

Dear Friends,
Join us this Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. as we celebrate the culmination of the church year "Christ the King Sunday" We'll enjoy special trumpet music and explore that sacredness of service, and the surprise (When was that again?) of those who serve "the least of these."
See you Sunday!

Also... you're invited to join us for our "Unpacking Discipleship" Bible Class at 9:15 a.m. as we receive a guest presenter from Green Bay, WI. Jamie Stark is a volunteer missionary working with the Lutheran Church of El Salvador, and he is coming to share what God has been doing in the Hope House Ministry in San Salvador.
Welcome Jamie Stark!
November 23, we welcome special guest Jamie Stark, who is a volunteer missionary serving in the Lutheran Church of El Salvador. He served from September of 2013 to May of 2014, supporting the ministry of the church by teaching English at Casa Concordia Orphanage/Guest House, helping with communication and hosting mission groups, and helping lead ministry, English classes, therapy and food at Casa Esperanza Homeless Ministry. He will be presenting during our Bible Discussion time and giving a temple talk in worship.

Next Sunday:1st Sunday of Advent, November 30th!
Please join us next Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. for very special Advent celebrations as we light the first candle! At the 10:30 a.m. service, we will enjoy special music from Forrest Kiehm on the trumpet and will be celebrating the baptism of Evelyn, daughter of Jeff and Marla Everett. Each child will also receive a special gift!

Growing Forward Capital Campaign Update
The Capital Campaign Committee composed of Gerhardt Boecler, Mark Franke, Pastor Anna-Kari Johnson, Mike Marinelli, Jason Ruger, Jim Volkens and Pastor Kristian Johnson would like to offer their blessings and gracious thanks to the congregation for their generous offerings towards our 2015-2017 Campaign from last Commitment Sunday. An initial update on the Growing Forward Capital Campaign pledges reflects that $141,629 has been committed from all of you to date. We would like to remind our members that it is still possible to make commitments now and going forward to the Campaign with time, talents and pledges. The Growing Forward Committee is working very hard to attain a 3-year giving dollar total of $300,000 from both our church and school members to fund much needed facility repairs and upgrades. For more information on the Campaign itself and these projects or to receive a Growing Forward Campaign brochure, please contact Jim Volkens at or 773-216-1624. To still submit your Capital Campaign offering, please fill out the Pilgrim Commitment card, which can be found at the back of the church or can be requested from the Church Office at

Fall Adult Bible Discussion Group: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
Our Prayer for Sunday
O God of power and might, your Son shows us the way of service, and in him we inherit the riches of your grace. Give us the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to serve the world you have made, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sunday’s Readings
First Reading:
Ezekiel 34:11–16, 20–24
Since Israel's kings proved to be bad shepherds, Ezekiel declares that the Lord will assume the role of shepherd in Israel. The Lord will also set over them a shepherd-messiah, "my servant David," who will feed and care for the people.

Second Reading: Ephesians 1:15–23
In this passage, God is praised for revealing ultimate divine power in raising Jesus from the dead. The resurrected, exalted Christ is Lord both of the church and the entire universe, now and in the age to come.

Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46
Jesus compares himself to a king who moves among his subjects to see how he is treated: what is done for the least of those who belong to his family is truly done for him.

Give the Gift of Warmth!
Pilgrim will once again support Coat Angels this holiday season. Coat Angels, founded by Pilgrim parent Micki LeSueur, provides coats for children in the city that would otherwise have no coat to wear this winter. We will be selling gift cards after the late service from November 16th through December 7th. A fifty-dollar donation provides a coat, hat, mittens and a scarf for one child, and makes a wonderful Christmas gift for friends and family. You can also purchase a gift card by contacting Lara Otsuka at or 773-255-6519.  Thank you for your support of this wonderful organization!

Prayer and Care Boxes—Dec 7
We would like to assemble a “Prayer and Care” Basket for our seniors and shut-ins. Last year, over 25 baskets were assembled and taken by Pilgrim members to deliver. If you have any Christmas decorations, devotional books, chocolate, or any other gifts a senior might enjoy, please bring them to the Pastor’s office or bring them to our assembly session on Sunday, December 7th at 9:20 a.m. For more information, please call Anna-Kari Johnson (773) 990-0814 or Many thanks to you all!

Gloves Needed for Hot Meals Program
Our guests at the hot meal have been asking if we could provide gloves as the weather is getting cooler. Please bring gloves to the church office or to the kitchen, placing them near the hot meals box. Thank you!

Thank You from Barbara Anthony
Dear Pilgrim Family, Thank you so much for all the gifts you gave towards that offering for my husband and me. What an amazing blessing you all have been and continue to be. I am so thankful for all of you. We pray blessings on Pilgrim and will miss this very special place. -Barbara
