Dear Friends,

It's hard to believe, but it's true: it's already the last Sunday in August!

You may be thinking... Do I want to spend one a precious August summer day at church?

Of course the answer is yes! The Word be as fresh as baked bread (John 6:56-69), the hymns will ground us in the Love of God, and we will enjoy an impromptu gathering of the Praise Team, as we offer praise to God inspired by the witness of Aretha Franklin.

Join us Sunday at 9:30 a.m.!
2018 Block Party - The Pilgrim church and school picnic is set for Sunday, September 16th, from 10:30 to 4:00. Come join the fun as we celebrate the coming together of the church, school, neighborhood and hot meals community. We plan to have two bands this year and all of the fun and games, the good food and the good weather. This year we are raising money for Refugee One - an organization that brings the community together to start new refugee families on the road to success. To volunteer, go to If you have questions, contact
Sarah Lau at

The Block Party is looking for small game prizes for children and also items that can be used in the Penny Social, bot both children and adults. If you can help, please contact Anne Barsano 773-472-6037 or Thank you!

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human and Social Development from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, and Master of Social Work degree from Loyola University (Chicago). Welcome, Meagan!

Welcome Seminarian Karl! Pilgrim is blessed to have received a student in the Mission in Context program for the 2018-19 school year. Students in the "MIC" program spend 7 hours learning and serving a week in a local congregation. Here is a note from our student Karl, who will be with us for the first time on September 9th! “Hello! I am Karl Anliker, a second year Master of Divinity student at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. I grew up in Indiana and attended Valparaiso University before doing Lutheran Volunteer Corps in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I currently live in Hyde Park with my wife Charlotte who teaches Kindergarten. We love living in Chicago, exploring the Field Museum, and walking in our neighborhood. I am excited to learn and grow alongside God's faithful servants at Pilgrim this year.”

Taking Faith Home is a devotional tool for families to use on a daily basis. It includes scripture readings, prayers and blessings to share. This week the theme is Jesus sends out his disciples, supporting this week’s Gospel reading. Bring Jesus into your home this summer with this easy to use guide for home worship. Weekly handouts will be on the table in the back of the church.

Prayer Requests - We are thankful for everyone who entrusts our prayer team and the Pilgrim community with prayer requests. Because time does not permit us to read the entire list each week, we read two sections out loud during each service: “For those Who Mourn” and ”Recent/Immediate”. When names are submitted, we keep them in these two section for a month. Then, we typically move them to the “Ongoing” list. We appreciate feedback and updates from those who have submitted names. If you would like a name to continue on the Recent/Immediate list because of the urgency of the situation, please let us know, and we will honor your request. If you would like us to remove a name from any list, please let us know. Please talk to Pastor Kristian or the Church Administrator, Renee, if you have any questions or feedback. It is important for all of us to be good stewards of this important ministry of prayer.

Prayer Time - We invite you to join us Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at the Parsonage for a time of prayer... it is so renewing!

Women’s Bible Study begins a new fall session on Wednesday, September 12th. We will be studying from the Women of the ELCA Gather magazine Bible Study series on “Multiple Meanings: Learning from interpretations.” Contact Renee at to get more info, and to be added to the email updates.
March in the Von Steuben Day Parade on September 8—We are inviting the Pilgrim Community to come out to the Von Steuben Day German Parade on Saturday, September 8th to march in this wonderful community event. Let's show our pride in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School. Please meet at the North Center CVS at 1:25 p.m. The parade usually ends around 3:00 p.m. in Lincoln Square. If you need more information or have any questions please contact Pastor Kristian at or Principal Comella at Thanks and we hope to have a huge turnout!!!

Participate in the Hunger Walk, Support Cornerstone Community Outreach! The Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk is September 8th, starting at 8:00 a.m. in Jackson Park. The walk is non-competitive, two miles long, and there is a rally with special speakers and various vendors all addressing hunger. Each person who registers and participates, no matter their age, helps to raise credits equaling 200 lbs. of food that help Cornerstone Community Outreach (CCO) in Uptown to feed to the over 300 homeless men, women, and children that are supported at their shelter. The sign up deadline is August 29th, but you HAVE to register online. Go to and Click Register and search for Cornerstone Community Outreach, so that your participation will directly benefit CCO. There is also a bus leaving from the uptown neighborhood that morning if you would like a ride. If you need help with directions or registering, or have any other questions, please contact Tressa Davis at Thank you!

Are we ready to Co-sponsor another Refugee Family? We have completed a very successful refugee con-sponsorship with Bethany UCC, and our Rohingya family has moved to Milwaukee, beginning a new life with the Mom having a new Rohingya husband. We wish them all the best! We are so grateful for the countless ways many of you contributed to this project! Now we are ready to begin preparation for co-sponsoring a another family, with support from RefugeeOne. Thank you for helping us raise just over $2,000 at our March 4th Chili and Dessert Cookoff! Now we need to raise an additional $6,000 and $8,000. If you want to help with fund raising, be a tutor or mentor for the family, or are willing to take on specific small projects, we need to know. We’d love if have a big enough team that the work isn’t overwhelming for anyone. Please inform Judy Beaupre at or Renee at if you want to join us. Even if you were on the previous team, we still want to know if you’re available again.

Pilgrim’s Card Ministry - If you have cards you would like to donate to Pilgrim’s Card Ministry, please give them to Michael Haisler. They will be sent to those with birthdays and anniversaries, those in need, in our prayers, or those who just need cheering up. They can be left in his mailbox in the Narthex. Thank you!
2018 Mortgage Campaign - We are using the account formally known as the Growing Forward Capital Campaign to continue to pay our monthly mortgage bill of $2,048. The 2018 Mortgage Campaign Giving is falling short of what is needed to pay the monthly bill. Thank you to everyone who is giving one time or monthly automatic contributions to the current 2018 Mortgage Campaign. We invite those who have not had a chance to give to this campaign to make a donation via check, with the memo saying "2018 Mortgage Campaign," or go to the giving page at and set up a monthly automatic payment. Thank you!

Windows Into Our Future - There are 30 classroom windows which face west along the alley. They are old, they are not energy/cost efficient, and they provide no sound proofing. We have set a goal to raise $85,000 in the next 10 months, and our appeal is to both school families and church members. We have raised $23,000 so far. We encourage both one-time donations and on-going monthly donations to this campaign over the coming 12 months. To give, visit and if you have any questions, please contact the school office at

Gift Cards - Pilgrim will be selling gift cards on Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. service and in the school office on Mondays from 9:00—10:00 a.m. You may also fill in an order form from the table in the narthex or school office or from the link below. Please leave it in the school office or with the Sunday Seller. Contact Anne Barsano at or 312-972-9040 with questions and for alternate pick up times. Thank you!
